AOLR Weekly Wrap-Up #54

If there is one show that can’t complain about a lack of attention, then it’s Hawaii Five-0! It’s a fun challenge keeping up with the volume of tweets and articles and this is before the series has even premiered. The recent publications have been focused on either Comic-Con, the TCA or the theme song, and as Alex O’Loughlin fans are already the best informed ones, I’ll mention only the items worth highlighting.

Hawaii Five-0 Articles & Buzz:
  • The Honolulu Star-Advertiser:

HIGH ‘FIVE’: CBS previewed its “Hawaii Five-0″ pilot to the Television Critics Association in Pasadena, Calif., last week, and partnered with affiliate Hawaii News Now to provide a local sneak peek to media and industry types the other day at the Halekulani Hotel. So let the buzz begin: Yes, there’s chemistry between the stars, awesome vistas of tropical Hawaii, frenetic movie-quality action sequences and wow factors when you least expect — plus that contagious theme song. Alex O’Loughlin earns his stripes as Steve McGarrett, Daniel Dae Kim finds his niche as Chin Ho Kelly, Grace Park overcomes the gender overhaul of her Kono Kalakaua character and Scott Caan emerges as the show’s spark plug as Danny “Danno” Williams. Book ‘em, folks, and welcome ‘em, at the first public look at Sunset on the Beach on Sept. 13, and in prime time at 9 p.m. Sept. 20 on KGMB9. …

  • And the above mentioned news report about the response from local media after getting a sneak peek at the pilot: Hawaii News Now.
  • Another Star-Advertiser article by Mike Gordon that is also worth a read:

The pilot episode of the classic police drama boasts a strong plot and good acting.
The names of the characters may be the same and the backdrop is still Hawaii, but that’s where the similarities end between the old and new “Hawaii Five-0,” the re invented CBS series that should leave audiences breathless for more.

  • Here’s a great mention of both Hawaii Five-0 and Alex O’Loughlin by Monsters & Critics:

Best new drama on network seen by M&C so far, hands down, is the “Hawaii Five-0″ remake starring Alex O’Loughlin (Det. Steve McGarrett), who was marvelous on the short-lived vampire dramedy “Moonlight,” and finally has a fantastic vehicle to show off all his talents.

Bonus for us is the pairing of Scott Caan (Det. Danny Williams) with O’Loughlin, which is casting alchemy at its finest. The two play off each other perfectly in scene after scene.

  • From a CliqueClack Preview (the entire article is worth checking out):

The new version, though, is easily accessible, and did a great job in making me a fan in a short time period. I have faith in the fact that Jack Lord has finally found a worthy replacement, and that Hawaii 5-0 is going to be a hit.

  • Peter Lenkov tweeted that in addition to the Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly, Entertainment Tonight, People and the New York Times also covered H50. The Wall Street Journal article was published on Friday and they did a great job: “The New ‘Hawaii Five-0′: Book ‘Em (Again), Danno”.
Hawaii Five-0 Updates:
  • The Hawaii Five-0 site at CBS.com has recently been expanded to include cast bios and pictures, so please check it out and bookmark it! The videos can only be viewed if you have a US IP, but you should be able to watch most of them on YouTube. I’ve also added larger versions of some of the cast pictures to the gallery.
  • Balthazar Getty is guest starring in episode 103 of Hawaii Five-0 (“Lanakila”) – as recently tweeted by Peter Lenkov.
  • Some on set photos were shared via Twitter: MicahMediaStars, ImEasy, and there are at least five of Alex in Meredith’s album (pics 21, 22, 24, 25 and 26 – taken on August 5th). Meredith also blogged about being an extra on the show!
  • Craig Ferguson spoke about Hawaii in his monologue on Thursday and it appears that he’s interested in winning the cast signed surfboard too. Check out his rendition of the H50 theme on YouTubethanks Deb!
  • More promotion of the show at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach!
  • We can expect to see the H50 cast fashionably attired as resort fashion suppliers Tori Richard tweeted that they’re providing the wardrobe for the show.
  • I added a scan from CBS Watch! magazine to the gallerywith thanks to Anita!
Other Updates:
  • A DVD with TV show pilots including the unaired Moonlight one was recently sold on eBay. The 25-minute Moonlight presentation has now been put on YouTube in two parts – you can watch Alex O’Loughlin’s initial interpretation of Mick St. John and the original cast at http://www.moonlightguide.net/!
  • EyeBite TV recently posted their video with red carpet interviews from The Back-up Plan premiere in LA with Alex and Jennifer. Also check out this billboard pic of Stan on Flickr!
  • I uploaded a higher quality video of Alex doing the Sydney photoshoot in January on YouTube.
  • A former film critic added Alex to his list of “10 Actors to Watch” with the following motivation:

Interest: Alex O’Loughlin placed # 6 on my list last year. I still Alex as an untapped resource on television. He has been pigeon-holed into his CBS contract. For me it was his turn as a vamp-detective in Moonlight that made me jump on Alex’s bandwagon. He then showed up as a maniac on TV’s Criminal Minds & in the bomb, Whiteout. Alex surprised me again in the romantic-comedy The Back-Up Plan where he is an unexpected dad opposite J.Lo. That movie was better that it should have been in my eyes and it had a lot to do with Alex. Future projects: Next up, Alex returns to TV for the remake of Hawaii Five-O. All the signs point to this being the show that will finally get Alex out there. Every series he has been in thus far has cratered after one season. Hawaii looks very very different. Check out the clip below! Damn this show looks like fun! What he needs to succeed: Hawaii Five-O has to sing and become a breakout hit of the new season. That will bring Alex more movie roles. Personally, I want to see Alex in a major adventure movie. I want him to deliver that charisma he has and save the world. He’s a leading man just waiting to strike.

  • Movieweb has brought together their Comic-Con video interviews on one page!
  • The Elephant Project auction of Alex O’Loughlin’s signed photo starts tonight. Check The Elephant Project website for details – auction proceeds benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. Happy bidding!
