Three Rivers: The Luckiest Man

Mandy Patinkin gave a stellar performance in last Sunday’s episode of Three Rivers as Victor, a man who chose to take back control by deciding to terminate his life and donate his organs rather than wait until the ALS he was afflicted with ended his life for him. “There’s a difference between committing suicide and choosing to die with whatever dignity I have left.”

ALS is also known in North America as Lou Gehrig’s Disease and the episode’s title, The Luckiest Man, is a reference to the speech Major League baseball player Lou Gehrig gave at his farewell in Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939 when he retired at age 36.

The sensitive and controversial topic was handled with great care and love in Three Rivers and the cast did an outstanding job of bringing the moving story to life.

To revisit The Luckiest Man, watch this lovely video recap edited to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Lucky Man done by Deb. A fitting tribute to a truly exceptional episode!
