Carol Barbee to Receive Two Awards for “Three Rivers”

According to a press release issued today by Donate Life Hollywood, Carol Barbee, creator of Three Rivers, will be receiving a Donate Life Hollywood Inspire Award as well as a Crystal Heart Award for the 2009 medical drama’s contribution to raising donor awareness.

The influence of the show starring Alex O’Loughlin, Kate Moennig, Daniel Henney, Alfre Woodard, Justina Machado and Christopher Hanke was such that at least four families consented to organ donation during the period that the initial eight episodes aired in the US last fall.

A national survey initiated by Donate Life America and pharmaceutical company Astellas shows a six percent increase in adults’ willingness to register as organ donors, which can possibly be attributed to Three Rivers.

“Donate Life Hollywood worked closely with the creator Carol Barbee who had a keen interest in assuring that her show did not harm and helped when it could. The result is that the show saved lives,” says Donate Life Hollywood campaign director Tenaya Wallace.

Both awards will be presented to Ms. Barbee on June 12th during the Donate Life Hollywood Inspire Awards dinner and ceremony in Beverly Hills.

The Inspire Award is presented annually for accurate and inspiring organ donation storylines on television and in film. The Crystal Heart Award will be presented jointly by the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations and the Coalition on Donation. Sponsored by the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation, it is awarded annually to the most effective media broadcast in America.

Other Inspire Award winners this year include an episode of Army Wives, an episode of Undercover Boss, two episodes of Extreme Makeover Home Edition and an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Three Rivers was also the recipient of Donate Life Hollywood’s first Inspire Award in June 2009 for the medical accuracy and inspiration of its pilot episode.

I learned from watching 3R and as a result, I was able to understand more clearly what was happening when my sister-in-law had to have a liver transplant. Carol Barbee, Alex O’Loughlin, and the entire cast of 3R deserve comendations for their work in not only entertainment but education.
