Stoneware is a hard ceramic material made from 25% ball clay, 15% china clay, 35% flint and 15% china stone that is fired to a high temperature (about 2185 degrees Fahrenheit) giving it a dark, rich textured look of hand made pottery. It can be glazed in a wide variety of colors and finishes (matte, satin and shiny) for diverse designs or left undecorated, but dinnerware pieces should be glazed to keep them water and chip resistant. If you are looking for a bullet-proof dinnerware material that can handle any family, then this is as close as you will get.
For our wedding, we were given a set of crystal goblets that are absolutely beautiful. It was a nice surprise since we hadn`t even considered needing them. We also received a set of different sized wine glasses. These have really come in handy since the last few years we`ve learned more about different wines and which types should be served in which glasses.
While everyone has their own tastes, I recommend looking for dinnerware that won`t go out of style. You may love the blue and orange floral design now, but will you be proud of it in twenty years? Investing in a good set will keep you from having to spend money in the future on new dinnerware if your current set is no longer appealing to the eyes.
