Hawaii Five-0 Articles
  • TV Guide has a cute article about Daniel’s fun Tweet Week contributions during Monday’s broadcast of episode 1.19: “6 Things We Learned From Hawaii Five-0′s Daniel Dae Kim During CBS Tweet Week.”
  • A teaser from TV Guide’s William Keck:

CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 will say a final aloha to a familiar face in the May 16 season closer. “It’s sort of our all-star episode,” teases exec producer Peter Lenkov. “Jean Smart [Governor Jameson], Kelly Hu [Laura Hills] and Will Yun Lee [Sang Min] are all coming back.” But one star will not return next season. “There will be a murder,” confirms Lenkov.

On the possible hit list: Grace Park (Kono), who may have tired of living in Hawaii, plus Jean and Kelly, both of whom have new NBC pilots. Stressing that “pilots may not get picked up,” Lenkov confirms that his cliff-hanger will be a “Holy crap! I-can’t-believe-they-did-that whodunit!”

  • The San Francisco Chronicle is absolutely right: “Island Food is the real star of Hawaii Five-0″! It’s a mouthwatering article and I don’t recommend reading it on an empty stomach…
  • If you’ve seen episode 1.19 and read last week’s wrap-up, then you’ll know that Joji Yoshida’s speaking part as Jack Leung didn’t make the final edit. Mike Gordon posted in his Outtakes today:

Yoshida had high hopes before the episode aired, noting it would help his career, but it happens all the time. In fact, when the “Five-0″ team gave the local acting community a lengthy orientation in February, the actors were told being cut wasn’t necessarily a judgment on their talent.

“Usually if I have to cut something out, it’s for the story, and people shouldn’t take it personally,” said Peter Lenkov, one of the show’s executive producers and a panelist at the event. “It’s not based on the performance. It’s based on the storytelling.”

Alex O’Loughlin, who leads the ensemble cast as Steve McGarrett, put it more colorfully: “In the business it’s called ‘killing your darlings.’”

    Ouch.

Mike also writes about the crew working with a burning car last Thursday. Check out the full article at the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

  • TV Over Mind posted the results from a survey conducted to determine the TV show with the strongest fandom. Among the factors considered were the level of participation in online activities as well as in-person activities. Two interesting conclusions can be drawn from the results:
    • The lower the show’s ratings, the higher the online passion;
    • Sci-fi shows have stronger online fandoms.

Hawaii Five-0 has a strong 5th place, which really shouldn’t surprise the writer given the fact that three of the show’s four leads were previously in genre series and of course, Alex’s core fandom has always been and will continue to be very active. The Big Kahuna will also undoubtedly be amused to hear that the average age of fans who participated in the survey is 27… :giggle:

  • Selita Ebanks plays opposite Sean Combs as his character’s wife in tomorrow’s episode of Five-0. According to TV Line’s Matt Mitovich, her very first scene with Combs was a romantic one:

Having only met Combs on occasion prior to the CBS drama, Ebanks says, “It was very awkward, because there was a love scene — my first ever! I was like, ‘No, no, can’t we warm up with other scenes first?’” That awkward intro aside, Ebanks came away with raves for Alex O’Loughlin & Co.: “The energy on set was so refreshing, so happy…. They gave me really great pointers, and I learned so much.”

  • TV Guide’s Matt Roush agrees that the renewal of Five-0 “is a no-brainer. It will be back next season.” :sun:
  • Tim Ryan posted that “preproduction for Five-0′s second season will begin in June with filming in early July…According to CBS, the production has spend more than $40 million on Oahu for season one…” and “In a message to the Hawaii Five-0 cast and crew today on the last day of filming, executive producer Peter M. Lenkov thanked them for ‘your hard work that has made this show such a great success’…Lenkov ended the message saying ‘See you in July’ which is when filming of season two begins…”
Other Alex Updates
  • Apparently liking the response to Alex’s US InStyle feature, the Australian edition of the magazine has also chosen our hot Aussie as their Man of Style – the May issue is out now!
  • An HD version of the video of Alex’s GQ Style shoot is available on YouTube!
  • You can now watch Three Rivers via online streaming on Netflix (a subscription to the service costs $7.99 per month) – thanks to Tobi for the tip! All episodes are also available in HD on iTunes for $2.99 each or you can purchase all episodes for $38.87.

More Five-0 fun tomorrow night on CBS! There will be another repeat on April 25, and then we’ll get the final three Season 1 episodes, starting on May 2.

Alex O’Loughlin’s Year in Review: 2010

Last year was an eventful and memorable one for Alex O’Loughlin. Although 2009 came to a close with the end of Three Rivers, in 2010 our goodnatured and optimistic Aussie came back with a bang! Here’s a look at last year’s highlights.

January 9 – Nina Tassler tells the TCA members assembled in Pasadena for the Winter Press Tour that Three Rivers is indeed canceled. The head of CBS Entertainment also confirms that the network is still interested in working with Alex O’Loughlin and that it is looking for a new show for him.

While Alex is in Australia enjoying some well-deserved R&R, fans are passing the time by speculating on what his next project might be. The Criminal Minds spinoff and James Patterson’s Private are mentioned.

January 14 - A laid-back Alex, sporting a beard, does a photoshoot for the Sunday Telegraph’s Sunday Magazine on a Sydney rooftop. In a behind-the-scenes video the Aussie shares his thoughts on the downside of fame.

“You don’t necessarily change, but people around you start to change because they think you are going change.”

January 15 – James Hibberd reports in his Live Feed blog that CBS has given the go ahead for a Hawaii Five-0 remake pilot penned by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Peter Lenkov. No other names are mentioned.

January 17 – Three intriguing tweets that have fans on the edge of their seats precede Michael Ausiello’s report on EW.com that “CBS really wants to do another series with him”. More specifically, the network would like to see him as the lead in the recently greenlit Hawaii Five-0 reboot.

February 10 – Ending weeks of nail biting and speculation (and what the actor will later confirm were “lengthy negotiations”), The Hollywood Reporter announces that Alex O’Loughlin has closed a deal with CBS to star as Steve McGarrett in Hawaii Five-0.

:danno:

February 16 – Alex picks up his refinished Sporty from Cro Customs Cycles. He and Cro have provided us with a peek at a side of Alex that we just love and we’re immensely grateful! In his own review of 2010, Cro posts:

By now, most know Alex from the remake of Hawaii 5-0. He’s an Aussie, so when I heard he may be the cat saying “Book em Dano” I told him he better make us Americans proud.

Alex was probably the best client you can have. He knew what he wanted, but allowed me room to throw some “Cro” things in there. He’s an avid 2 wheeler and not a fly by night hipster. Loves riding, and man did he put this bike through the ringer. He rides the piss out of it. To spite the Hollywood gig, he is a stand up dude, works hard, loves bikes and life. It was a pleasure building the bike and making a new friend, and shit, he made a movie with J Lo!! I visited him on set one day, and yes, she is hot!

March 8 – Shooting for the Hawaii Five-0 pilot commences in sunny Oahu! Although CBS has decreed a media blackout, eager fans are able to follow the filming’s progress exceptionally well, thanks to the social media, locals, paparazzi and the Hawaiian press. Unfortunately, the articles posted by the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin are no longer available online since both papers merged into the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in June 2010.

Preparing for a scene in the pilot of 'Hawaii Five-0'

March 11 – The cast is shooting John McGarrett’s funeral scene at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (a.k.a. Punchbowl National Cemetery) and this results in the first paparazzi pictures of Alex as Steve McGarrett. The Lieutenant Commander looks dashingly handsome in his Navy dress blues despite the heat and humidity!

:love2:

March 28 – With the pilot having wrapped on March 27, Alex’s focus is now fully on press and publicity for The Back-up Plan, whose release date of April 21 is drawing near. A multi-day media event kicks off with a portrait session and a Q&A session with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. It marks the start of a publicity offensive that includes Twitter, Facebook, online games, sweepstakes, and even yellow cabs.

April 14-16 – The pre-release activities for The Back-up Plan are in full swing and CBS has arranged five television appearances in New York City for our hottie! Of course, he is also snapped by paparazzi on his first evening in the Big Apple and goodnaturedly signs autographs.

First on his agenda on the 15th is an autograph session for fans followed by an interview on The Early Show. Then, filling in for fellow Aussie and chef Curtis Stone, he joins The Today Show’sGuys Tell All” panel where he has fun answering questions from female viewers.

Up bright and early again the next morning, Alex appears on PIX11 Morning News, whose interviewer shows signs of acute adoritis – and who can blame her? He is also photographed by paparazzi when he arrives and later leaves the studio building. Later that morning he goes on to charm two more TV personalities: The Today Show hosts Kathie Lee and Hoda.

During his stay in NYC, he also tapes an appearance that is captivating and adorable on the Rachael Ray Show. The segment is airs on April 21.

April 19 – Never having been on Jimmy Kimmel Live before, Alex initially seems quite nervous but goes on to give an entertaining and funny interview at the El Capitan Theatre back in Hollywood.

April 20 – Australians in Film organizes a screening of The Back-up Plan at LA’s Harmony Gold Threater and Alex is present to answer questions from the audience afterwards.

Alex faces the photographers lining the red carpet at the US premiere of 'The Back-up Plan'

April 21 – The US premiere of The Back-up Plan is a big day not just for Alex and his leading lady Jennifer Lopez, but also for his fans! Thousands of women have waited impatiently for over a year to see their hero in his first big US feature. Teased by hundreds of photos taken during a month of location shooting in paparazzi-ridden New York City the previous summer and more recently by countless video clips and interviews, fans the world over are excited and anxious. Possibly more so than Alex himself.

Looking relaxed, happy and stylish (“because every cheese farmer is ripped and buff”) in a charcoal Jil Sander suit paired with a striped tie, gold-accented cream shirt and black boots, Alex appears unfazed by the solid wall of paparazzi flanking the red carpet at the Westwood Village Theatre. As considerate as always, he also spends time chatting, signing autographs and posing for pictures for his own fans. After the screening, the festivities continue at the after party at the W Hotel.

April 26 – En route to London for the UK premiere of The Back-up Plan, a smiling and goateed Alex, looking devilishly handsome, is snapped by a paparazzo at LAX for the first time.

April 28 – Alex, Jennifer and director Alan Poul attend The Back-up Plan premiere at London’s famous Leicester Square. Alex, who has never before experienced a London premiere, is surprised at the scale of the reception:

It’s amazing – look at this, I’ve never been on a pink carpet before. It’s wonderful, it’s great to be here. I really appreciate all the fans and all the support. This is incredible!

May 13 – Alex shows up at Australians in Film’s 2010 Breakthrough Awards ceremony held at the Thompson Hotel in Beverly Hills. The event honors actress Bella Heathcote, who is awarded the Heath Ledger Scholarship, and Ryan Kwanten and Chris Hemsworth, who each received a Breakthrough Award.

May 17 – Two days before CBS’s upfront presentation, the news spreads that the network has picked up the Hawaii Five-0 reboot! The feedback from the islands is positive.

May 19 – Alex and his fellow Hawaii Five-0 cast members attend the CBS Upfront at Carnegie Hall and the after party at the Lincoln Center in New York City.

In its primetime schedule release, CBS announces that the show will air on Mondays at 10 pm, bumping CSI: Miami to Sunday nights. This puts Hawaii Five-0 up against Castle and Chase.

After the upfront, the first promos are released online: a BTS preview, and the main title sequence which is later revised for the series premiere. TV promos start airing on the network a few days later.

Alex and 'Hawaii Five-0' cast mates make their first TV appearance on 'The Early Show'

May 20 – The Hawaii Five-0 cast’s first group TV appearance is on The Early Show, where they are interviewed by co-anchor Harry Smith, who calls the reboot a “well thought-out, rocking show” and angles for a guest starring role.

May 22 – Alex and cast mate Daniel Dae Kim represent Hawaii Five-0 at the LA Screenings, where international buyers gather each year to shop for new TV shows. David Poltrack, CBS’s Chief Research Officer, is to say later in the year:

“Hawaii Five-O is a profitable company before syndication based on the network license fee and the international sales for that show, which were huge. It’s already in the black before [we] even hit syndication.”

June 5 – CBS finally broadcasts the original – previously unaired -  pilot of Three Rivers. Four new episodes follow, airing each Saturday at 8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT until the final installment is broadcast on July 3.

Donate Life Hollywood's Person of the Year 2010

June 11 – It is a visibly humbled Alex who steps onto the podium at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills to give his acceptance speech for having been voted Donate Life Hollywood’s Person of the Year. One of five nominees, he was recognized for having worked closely with the national Donate Life campaign to inspire Americans to register as organ and tissue donors, a collaboration that began while Alex was starring on Three Rivers in 2009.

June 24Hawaii News Now reports that Hawaii Five-0 will premiere on September 20, and that locals can enjoy a special Sunset on the Beach screening of the pilot a week earlier, on September 13.

July 15 - For an auspicious run and in honor of its host culture, Hawaii Five-0 kicks off production with a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony on the lawn of the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu. Present are the series stars, the producers, crew and guests. Alex is impressed by the beautiful custom, calling it, “amazing” and “incredible”. Immediately after the blessing, the cast sets to work filming the first episode of the show.

July 22 - CBS announces its fall premiere dates and confirms that Hawaii Five-0 debuts on September 20 – exactly 42 years after the original series premiered.

July 23 – Represented by Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, EPs Peter Lenkov, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and pilot director Len Wiseman, the Hawaii Five-0 Comic-Con panel faces a full and appreciative house in San Diego without Scott Caan and Alex O’Loughlin, who remain behind to film in Hawaii. During the session, Kurtzman speaks highly of Alex and refers to him as “our cornerstone“.

July 28 – Flanked by Scott Caan, Peter Lenkov and Alex Kurtzman, Alex O’Loughlin takes part in the panel at the semi-annual TCA Press Tour in Beverly Hills. The gathering is the opportunity for the assembled media representatives to ask the stars and producers questions about their show prior to the start of the new television season. It always results in a high volume of print and online articles, and today’s session is no exception.

"My name name is Alex O'Loughlin, my character name is Steve McGarrett."

August 3 – “My name name is Alex O’Loughlin, my character name is Steve McGarrett.” With these immortal words, Alex introduces himself in his Hawaii Five-0 video profile!
:sendlove:

September 13 – Months of anticipation culminate in what Governor Linda Lingle proclaims to be “Hawaii Five-0 month”. One of the highlights is surely the local Sunset on the Beach premiere, that draws a crowd of more than 10,000 excited viewers according to Hawaii News Now. Astounded at the turnout and buoyed by the festive atmosphere, Alex admits to feeling “humbled, deeply grateful and really overwhelmed”.

In addition to the cast, crew and producers and their guests, also present at the show’s “biggest screen test” are Governor Linda Lingle and acting Mayor of Honolulu Kirk Caldwell, the three daughters of the original show’s creator Leonard Freeman, as well as two stars from the first series, Al Harrington and Jimmy Borges.

The pilot is very well received and all stakeholders can breathe a sigh of relief.

Alex at CBS's Fall Season Premiere Party in LA

September 16 – With just four days till premiere night, Alex is back in LA to do promotion for the series, including taping The Ellen DeGeneres Show – another first for the Aussie – and an interview with Extra at The Grove. In the evening, he makes an appearance at The Colony, where CBS hosts its 2010 Fall Season Premiere party.

September 20 – Numerous entertainment shows precede the nation-wide premiere of Hawaii Five-0 with interview segments and clips from the pilot. Of course, The Early Show airs a feature and Ellen DeGeneres broadcasts her interview with the new Steve McGarrett.

The highly anticipated pilot episode draws an initial audience of 14.2 million viewers and scores a rating of 3.9 in the key demographic of viewers age 18-49. A very solid start for a reboot that drew some initial skepticism. These figures are later boosted by a record number of DVR viewings and Hawaii Five-0 goes down in the history books as the most DVR’ed show ever. Viewership figures hit the 17.5 million mark and the final rating for the pilot is… 5.0.

Kono: “I like that. Five-oh.

October 13 – With the rights to air Hawaii Five-0 having been purchased across the globe (an unverified 200 countries has been mentioned), the production opens its doors to the international press in Honolulu’s old post office building, where the task force’s HQ set is located.

Markets where the series is already airing or is confirmed to air are: Asia (AXN), Australia (Ten), Latin America (Liv) and Europe (including the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, France, Spain and Portugal).

October 21 – CBS announces via a press release that all five of its new shows are getting a full season order, including Hawaii Five-0 that has so far averaged 14.2 million viewers and a 4.1 A18-49 rating. Nina Tassler states:

“Everything has clicked so far this year—from development in January, to scheduling in May, to production over the summer, to marketing and publicity in the fall. It’s all testimony to the executives in our halls who remain restless for more success, and the amazing creative talent on our sets who continue to deliver the goods.”

November 12People includes Alex in its 100 Sexy Men lineup, leading up to the annual selection of the Sexiest Man Alive.

November 30 – According to Nielsen’s Live+7 stats, Hawaii Five-0 broke its own DVR playback record set by the pilot in premiere week. Mana’o, episode 1.07, was viewed on DVR by 3.498 million people, which is 121,000 more viewers than the pilot.

December 7 – A post on Examiner.com reveals that Alex has adopted a 6-month-old Australian Border Collie mix puppy that he found in a junkyard while shooting Hawaii Five-0. He has named the cutie Reggie, after his grandfather.

December 13 – The last new Hawaii Five-0 episode of the year airs on CBS. Based on the first 12 installments (including the pilot), “TV’s #1 new show” draws an average weekly audience of 14.58 million, 3.2 million of whom watch the series on their DVRs. The show’s average A18-49 rating is a very competitive 4.2. It is one of three new shows that made it to the year’s top 20 and it is the most popular of the season’s new offerings, according to a New York Times article based on Nielsen statistics.

"What we’ve done with this show is innovative and exciting and fantastic. If Jack Lord were here I hope he’d feel the same way."

December 22 – Shooting for the first year wraps today and the cast and crew can enjoy a well-deserved break until the first week of January. Meanwhile, fans are casting multiple votes for Hawaii Five-0 as the People’s Choice for “Favorite New TV Drama”.

Everyone is hopeful that the series will be renewed for a second season, but the best message of 2010 is that Alex O’Loughlin now has the hit show he deserves!

With special thanks to: the faithful visitors of this site (your comments, tips and feedback are greatly appreciated), the ladies at Hawaii Five-o Fans, Nadioz, CBS, and last but never least, Skylar (Go MSP!) and AM for keeping me motivated and inspired. May 2011 be your best year yet!

AOLR Weekly Wrap-Up #5-0

We’re at #50 already… time flies!

Hawaii Five-0 Updates:

  • ABC is confident that Castle and Hawaii Five-0 can co-exist in the same Monday night time slot, because the network is making no changes to its schedule for Nathan Fillion’s show. CBS has still not made an official announcement about Hawaii Five-0‘s premiere date, so all we have to go on so far remains the Hawaii News Now report.
  • You know it’s definitely a slow news week when CBS’s shortest press release ever gets more attention than a 52-character sentence would normally merit!

Don’t blink, or you’ll miss it: The “0″ in HAWAII FIVE-0 is a zero, not a capital O.

Not that our Hawaii Five-0 really needs it, but a little extra spotlighting is never a waste. Here are some of the funniest journalistic responses on the web to the network’s reminder:

    • Variety:

Get ready this fall for CBS’ new Monday night drama, “Hawaii Five-Zero.”

Yep, in what the Eye has billed its “shortest press release in history,” the network has informed journos that it’s not the capital letter “O” but instead, the number “0,” in the show title “Hawaii Five-0.”

But yet, that zero is still pronounced “O.” As in “Oh.” As in, “Oh, we’re just effing with you.”
      [...]

    • EW PopWatch/Mandi Bierly:

What one-sentence press release would you have issued about the show? Having seen the pilot, which I enjoyed, I would have gone with, “You only have to wait 29 mins. and 53 secs. to see Alex O’Loughlin shirtless.”

    • Los Angeles Times:

We were confused by that because, for one thing, we are easily confused. But also because people always pronounced it “five-oh,” which led to the slang term for police, “5-0.” You know, as in, “Run! 5-0 coming!”

A CBS insider explains that the clarification was necessary because of Internet searches. If people type the title wrong, then they might miss out on what CBS is doing to promote the show, say, on cbs.com or Twitter or Facebook. Variety took this seriously and analyzed you users of the Internet. In conclusion: It does make a difference. A Google search with the zero netted 263,000 results; using the letter yielded 1.7 million.

Besides, the CBS insider added, it’s not the network’s fault that we all insist on reading zeroes in copy as the letter “o.”

“Blame society,” she said. “This is really for editors and for people who want to type things correctly. I know there aren’t many of them because accuracy has taken a back seat to immediacy.”
      [...]

  • The San Diego Comic-Con schedule for Friday, July 23rd is now available and this is the info for Hawaii Five-0:

10:15-11:15 Aloha, Earth! — Lost castaway found! Battlestar Cylon becomes human! Star Trek writers return from space! A supernatural force has drawn some of sci-fi’s giants back to Earth — and they’re all gathering on a beautiful and mysterious island in the Pacific. It’s Hawaii Five-0, a modern-day reimagining of one of television’s most beloved and iconic classics. The epic series, one of the most anticipated new shows of the season, will explore the origins of the Five-0 team and build on an already rich mythology. Executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek) and Peter M. Lenkov (24), director Len Wiseman (Underworld), and stars Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) and Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica) present an exclusive sneak peek at the series and an in depth discussion on how they plan to marry their genre sensibilities with a classic police procedural. Hawaii Five-0 Articles & Buzz

  • A recent article for Associated Content highlights the diverse Hawaii Five-0 cast, but it doesn’t sound like the writer has seen the pilot (where McGarrett’s and Danno’s chemistry is quite clearly already established) and he/she certainly didn’t pay attention to the previously mentioned press release… :giggle:

The lesser characters for the 2010 series Hawaii Five-O, may have to keep the series alive in the beginning. The new McGarrett and Danno will take some time to form desired chemistry, that the show will need going forward. If Hawaii Five-O can survive the first season, I think the series may take off. It will not have a twelve year run like the original Hawaii Five-O, but it could have a good five or six years. That would make CBS more than happy. A big factor in Hawaii Five-O, and any success it may have, will rely on CBS establishing great villains for the show. The original Hawaii Five-O had veteran actor Khigh Dheigh, play the diabolical Wo Fat. Forget the catch phrase and iconic theme song, I want great villains. A “Scarface” type villain, will make the Hawaii Five-O series a winner this fall.

  • A lengthy post from TV Guide’s Ask Matt that’s initially about Three Rivers, but also ties in to Hawaii Five-0:

Question: Am I crazy or did CBS have a death wish for Three Rivers before it was ever started? They promo’ed it all last summer so we couldn’t wait for it to begin, and our family loved the show. Great cast, good story lines, it just seemed to have everything. Then CBS just killed the show with its scheduling. By putting it on Sunday night during football season, which often ended as late as 7:30 pm/ET, so it had to contend with 60 Minutes, whatever reality show was on and then Cold Case before it ever got on, sometimes as late as 11 pm, who would bother to watch it then? (I would record it on my DVR and watch it the next day, but even that was a challenge since the programming schedule was so thrown off—such a pain!). I’m sure the local news on CBS affiliate stations suffered as well. Now the rest of the Three Rivers episodes which had not been aired came back on to fill in during the summer hiatus. [The final episode aired Saturday night.] We still love the show and I just wanted to express my displeasure with CBS. For many years now, the overall quality of CBS programming has been far superior to the other major networks and CBS had something to be proud of; but I feel that quality may be slipping away. Bringing back a remake of Hawaii Five-O with Alex O’Loughlin in it, instead of giving him and Three Rivers a fighting chance, is going to backfire, I think. (I read somewhere that Alex O’Loughlin is going to be treated as somewhat of a sex symbol in this remake, which will be the selling point of the show. Too bad, because I think he deserves better than that). Maybe I’ll be proven wrong about that, but my gut tells me it could very well be disappointing. Perhaps you didn’t think much of Three Rivers and we just had poor taste. But I can only say that after it disappeared abruptly partway through the season, off and on since the winter, one or another of us in our family would mention Three Rivers and how much we missed it.—G May

Matt Roush: To play devil’s advocate, the very fact that CBS aired promos all last summer that caught your attention is a sign CBS did not want Three Rivers to fail. (The network brought critics on the set last summer, and it’s clear they spent some money putting this show on its feet.) Though it can appear otherwise, networks don’t have a “death wish” about any show they put on the fall schedule, even the ones CBS chooses to air on Sundays after football. This situation is nothing new for CBS. It has had to deal with those overruns for as many years as I’ve been covering TV, and CBS analyzes the results accordingly. Three Rivers was not a very well reviewed show, that’s true, but lack of media buzz and subpar ratings (coupled with the ill effects of the Sunday scheduling) pretty much doomed it. As for your surprise that CBS is trying to package Alex O’Loughlin as a sex symbol, where have you been? Ever since the short-lived Moonlight, his fan base has been all about the hubba-hubba. That’s only going to intensity once Hawaii gets out there (although on that show, he’s going to have plenty of competition). In the big picture of things, Three Rivers with its transplant storylines always ensuring the death of one character to help another survive may have been too much of a downer for the mass audience.

  • Another non-review, this time by HitFix’s Daniel Fienberg, who is clearly not a fan of CBS procedurals, but he enjoyed the H50 pilot nevertheless:

Quick Response: Nothing in Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Peter Lenkov’s take on “Hawaii Five-0″ is especially fresh and notable, so an awful lot of credit has to be given to director Len Wiseman (“Live Free or Die Hard”) for making this pilot so much fun. You know the old cliche about pilots that look like movies? This one does. It’s a somewhat dizzying, over-edited, slightly over-directed movie, but the Hawaii cinematography is breathtaking, the stunts are proficient and the explosions are fireball-tastic. I don’t usually find CBS procedurals to be especially entertaining. They have their language and their rhythms and they speak that language well, but they aren’t necessarily entertaining. The “Hawaii Five-0″ pilot is utterly entertaining, albeit in a mindless sort of way. What’s going to happen when Wiseman departs? A valid concern. CBS’ Golden Boy Alex O’Loughlin has a good vehicle here, because all he’s asked to do is be earnest and to occasionally take his shirt off. He succeeds admirably on both counts. Co-star Scott Caan is far more entertaining, as the brash, sarcastic Dan-O — think of Caan’s “Ocean’s Eleven” character, with a badge. Grace Park is first introduced surfing in a skimpy bikini and her character is later strip-searched down to her undies, but she conveys the necessary determination and strength that you watch her even when she isn’t being objectified. Expect the producers to dedicate most of their creative juices to figuring out ways to keep Park in similar states of undress, though with the Islands backdrop, it won’t really be hard. Also fine? Daniel Dae Kim and a slew of guest actors whose presence in the pilot surprised me (and I’ll leave them unspoiled for you as well). Toss in the beloved opening credit theme and you have a show that ought to be a winner for CBS, even if it doesn’t feel like a CBS show. It’s too bright and sunny.

Desire To Watch Again: Surprisingly strong. It’s in a time period where I have DVR space available most weeks and I’m curious how well they’ll be able to maintain the pilot production values sans Wiseman. If subsequent weeks see it become Just Another CBS Procedural, I can definitely tune out, but I enjoyed watching the “Hawaii Five-0″ pilot.

  • A brief intro of Hawaii Five-0 has been posted on the CBS Watch! site. It’s possible that it will be included in the August issue (out late July), but I’m hoping there will be a lot more in the September issue of the magazine.

Other Updates:

  • From a review of The Back-up Plan at Suite101:

There is little Lopez has done that she didn’t excel in; she’s beautiful, charming and funny. She has the ability to be both comical and romantic all at once. She is truly the perfect pick for this movie, and pulls Zoe’s character off perfectly: a highly functional woman who has her doubts about the reliability of men in general because her parents divorced at a very young age.

To counter her, is Alex O’Loughlin in the part of Stan, surprisingly not nearly as big a name as Lopez. Despite his lesser known status, he delivers a wonderful performance of a man who, while he’s very unsure about fatherhood, he’s still willing to do what’s right for the woman he honestly loves. O’Loughlin offers a warm personality to this role, and he brings the character to life honestly.

  • Check out this video of Alex at the LA premiere of The Back-up Plan that was recently posted on YouTubethanks Andrea!
  • Jim Halterman has discovered that posting about Alex O’Loughlin brings in traffic and his “Ask Jim” blog feature (not unlike Matt Roush’s “Ask Matt”) will undoubtedly draw in some fans. The first Alex-related question is up and surprise, surprise… it’s about Moonlight. The year is 2010 and the show is called Hawaii Five-0, folks :wink2: !

Hawaii Five-0 Updates:

  • Tim Ryan posted that the Hawaii Five-0 production offices will open around July 6th.
  • It’s inevitable that the 2010 show will be continue to be compared with the original show until the new series finds its audience, which I hope will happen quite soon once the new Hawaii Five-0 debuts. In the unlikely event that you don’t know what some of the differences are between the two, check out TV Guide’s photo gallery Hawaii Five-0: Then and Now.
  • In addition to Canada, Australia and Germany, audiences in the UK can now also look forward to watching Hawaii Five-0 as Virgin Media Television’s Bravo channel has acquired exclusive UK pay TV, Freeview and digital rights. Bravo attracts a largely male audience and is distributed to 20 million households. WorldScreen reports that the channel will air the show in the fall as part of its prime-time schedule.
  • According to a recent Advertising Age survey, ad buyers are expecting only modest commercial ratings from the upcoming fall shows despite a 7%-10% increase in ad time. For Hawaii Five-0, a C3 rating is being projected.

C3, the shorthand term for commercial ratings, measures the number of viewers who actually watch commercials during a selected program rather than changing channels or fast-forwarding past them with a digital video recorder. Viewers who watch ads live as they run or as many as three days after they air are included in the ratings.

A household rating is an estimate of the size of a TV audience relative to the total universe of homes with TVs. Nielsen estimates there are 114.9 million U.S. TV households, so a single national household ratings point is equal to 1%, or 1,150,000 households.

Based on this formula, roughly 8.33 million households are expected to stick with the commercials during an episode of Hawaii Five-0.

Hawaii Five-0 Articles & Buzz:

  • Movieline’s What to Watch Guide for the Rest of the Year includes Hawaii Five-0:

If you remotely enjoyed any of Alex O’Loughlin’s previous stabs at CBS series, you will love the network’s Hawaii Five-O reboot.
Yes, Alex O’Loughlin is headlining a fall series that actually has potential to last more than one season. In the high-profile, big-budget reimagining, the CBS golden boy fights crime in the 50th state alongside his wry partner, played by Scott Caan.

  • Virgin Media lists Hawaii Five-0 among their Ten Hot US Pilot Prospects:

CBS’ 2010 take on the 70s classic is bang up-to-date. The cast includes Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim and The Shield’s Alex O’Loughlin, and promises to balance cutting-edge gadgetry and special effects with a nod to the past – many characters are related to, or share names with, those from original.

  • The Honolulu Star-Advertiser recently interviewed Walea Constantinau, who heads the Honolulu Film Office. One question pertaining to the new Hawaii Five-0 was raised:
  • Q: About the “Five-O” remake: I’ve heard a rumor that not very much of it will be shot here. Is that correct?

A: To my knowledge, they are going to shoot the show here. I’m not sure how that got started, but I heard it, too.

  • An excerpt from Haute Living Magazine:

As filming of George Clooney’s The Descendants wrapped and the popular television series Lost has ended, there is a new project underway on the island of Oahu. CBS has committed to twelve episodes of a new and improved Hawaii Five-O television series. Filming will begin July 15th on Honolulu and is scheduled to air in CBS’s fall line-up. Word on the street is that Five-O will be hiring some of the same crew and using the same facility that recently housed Clooney’s The Descendants movie production.

As we know, the H50 production chose instead to make use of the former Honolulu Advertiser warehouse. From an article by The Honolulu Star-Advertiser:

Whether the interior or exterior of the historic Advertiser building will be used for any scenes was not confirmed, said Erika Kauffman, local unit publicist.

Before booking the warehouse, the network had its eye on the old CompUSA site where South Street meets Ala Moana Boulevard. The facility recently housed “The Descendants” movie production starring George Clooney, based on a book by isle writer Kaui Hemmings. Kauffman confirmed the site had been on the network’s short list.

Erika Kauffman also shared that, “There was no local primary sound stage used for shooting the pilot.” The warehouse location that the production has selected will house a mini sound stage as well as Danny Williams’s apartment. Cue: a picture of the schematic of Danno’s place – posted by J.R. Orci.

  • In a different approach to the reviews-that-shall-not-be-called-reviews we’ve been reading lately, The Kansas City Star paired the best summer shows with upcoming fall pilots. Read how Hawaii Five-0 does in comparison with Burn Notice (a scan of this article has also been added to the gallery):

For its remake of the popular 1970s series, CBS decided to add some “NCIS” spice to “Hawaii Five-O.” Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) is still an ex-Navy officer running a state police unit at the governor’s behest, but now the bad guys are human traffickers and narco-terrorists rather than Chinese commies and garden-variety thugs.

The show has an explosive opening scene, leading into the quick-cut opening credits, which make the original 1968 “Five-O” sequence seem timid by comparison (but the remake of Morton Stevens’ theme song isn’t as good as the original). The pacing of the pilot is intense and full of shoot-’em-ups.

An action show with an international flavor, filmed in a gorgeous ocean-side locale — hey, that sounds a lot like “Burn Notice,” now in its fourth season on USA. Like the “Five-O” pilot, its first episode opened with a thrilling chase scene, as Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) eluded gun-toting criminals on motorcycles.

But “Burn Notice” is full of light touches missing from the “Five-O” pilot. There are humorous exchanges between Michael and his co-conspirators, as well as Michael’s trademark voiceovers about spy work (“In a fight, you have to be careful not to break the little bones in your hand on someone’s face — that’s why I like bathrooms”). Also, McGarrett and his cohorts are true white hats, practically beyond reproach. Network audiences may like that, but “Burn Notice” fans like morally messy characters.

Other Updates:

  • The amusing Chicago Sun-Times article “Vampire Empire has Died, But Who Can Replace?” takes a look at what creatures can take the place of vampires, who apparently are on the way out.
  • In the LA Times article “The Unreal World: ‘Three Rivers’ Firefighter Suffers Lung Damage associate professor of Medicine Marc Siegel takes a closer look at the medical reality of Three Rivers episode Every Breath You Take.
  • With Moonlight enjoying a rerun on the CW, Ed Gross has reposted Alex O’Loughlin’s personal take on the show’s episodes at Vampires and Slayers. The same article was also featured in last year’s SFX Vampire Special, scans of which you’ll find in the gallery.
  • Locate TV posted the blog  Star Trek: Can Alex O’Loughlin make his latest big TV role stick? It’s not my kind of  article as I simply don’t like the writer’s approach. Even though some may consider it pro Alex, I think any perceived compliments are backhanded and the tone patronizing. Overall, I find it quite grating, but of course everyone should decide for themselves.
