The Varied Faces of Alex O’Loughlin

Here’s a lighthearted look at Alex O’Loughlin’s movie and TV career to date*. He has chosen very diverse roles, playing the good guy as well as the villain, participating in both indie films and international productions. “I love playing different roles, the more variety the better. Once I’ve played a role I don’t want to play it again,” he told TVAddict.com in April 2009.

Even though the humble Alex feels he’s only a medium talent, even believing at one point that he wasn’t good enough to pursue acting as a career, his fans and the entertainment industry know better. Alex doesn’t think of himself as a star and doesn’t take himself too seriously — qualities that add to his growing popularity, but he does take a serious approach to acting: “I walk in the shoes of the character 24 hours a day.”

*One missing role is that of Ian Mack in the Australian TV series White Collar Blue, episode 2.01.

The Star Online: Australians in Action

tbup-160709-30In the same vein as the recently released documentary Australians Hit Hollywood, the Star Online writes about the infiltration by acting talent from Down Under of a Tinseltown that has already been conquered by the British.

Now, keeping both the English and Americans on their toes are the Australians.

The article goes on to list fourteen diligent Aussies (in random order) who can be seen regularly on American television. Alex O’Loughlin is one of them.

9. Alex O’Loughlin (Moonlight) – Canberra-born O’Loughlin deserves a mention (although his vampire series Moonlight was sucked out after just one season) simply because of his guest spot on Criminal Minds. Never mind that it was for just one episode, but it was so creepy it was good! When Moonlight wasn’t renewed for a second season, a fan-based charity campaigned for its return by holding blood donation drives. He began his career in film in 2004. The next year, he auditioned for the role of James Bond – with no luck. O’Loughlin, 33, got an all-access pass to American TV when he was cast as Detective Kevin Hiatt for seven episodes in the sixth season of crime drama The Shield. His fans can rejoice now that he’s working on a new series, Three Rivers, which focuses on an organ transplant team. O’Loughlin’s character is inspired by a real-life surgeon.

Walton Goggins and Alex O'Loughlin at charity event "The Bash"

On Sunday, May 17th Alex O’Loughlin joined other celebrities who turned up at “The Bash” in support of the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Play Therapy Fund. The charity event, organized by LA based teens for teens, took place at the legendary Beverly Hills restaurant Crustacean. Among the guests were also Alex’s former colleagues from The Shield: Walton Goggins and Michael Chiklis, who was there to support his daughter Amber, a board member of the charity.

Also present was the Mother Nature Network, who gauged the level of greenness in Hollywood. Alex informed them that he not only conserves water and recycles, but that he also rides his motorcycle whenever he can instead of taking the car. “I just try to be conscientious. I try to be resourceful and frugal with what I use,” he said.
