Academy of Science Fiction Opens Membership to Public

Moonlight's Mick and Beth - courtesy of CBS

[Updated 08-April-09]

I previously mentioned that Moonlight has been nominated for a 2009 Saturn Award, which is presented annually by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films to honor and recognize genre filmmaking. Moonlight is eligible for an award in the category “Best Television Series Release on DVD”, along with six other DVD releases.

While it is only possible for Academy members to vote, this non-profit organization has recently opened its membership to the public and will be accepting members for the next couple of weeks who wish to vote in the 2009 Saturn Awards! Although it appears as if only US residents are eligible for membership, the Academy has confirmed that anyone can join. All members have a vote for Best Films of the year.  Members who wish to vote in specific categories (Writing, Television, DVD, Music, etc.), may sign up for two of them.

Ballots will be mailed in a few weeks’ time, so if you are interested in joining, please do so as soon as possible.

A regular membership for 2009 costs $140 and will permit you to vote in the Saturn Awards as well as attend screenings in the LA area. An invitation to the awards show is also included. This year, the show will be held in Burbank, California on June 24th. An out-of-state membership ($40) will also enable you to vote and is intended for those who live outside the Southern California area and cannot be used to attend screenings in the Los Angeles area. It does not include an invitation to the awards show.

Visit the Academy’s website for full details on all memberships.

The website also shares the following information about final balloting and  DVD voting procedures:

Final Balloting:
Official ballots are sent out to the members of the Academy. All Academy members receive ballots to determine the BEST FILM winners (science fiction, fantasy, horror, action/adventure/thriller). Members serving on an area committee receive ballots to determine the winner in their respective categories (acting, direction, writing, etc.).

Ballots are mailed to an accounting firm (or accountant) where the votes are counted. The winners are presented their awards at the dinner/awards show.

To the best of his ability, the awards manager tries to balance each area committee with one third professionals, one third fans, and one third academics.

DVDs:

DVDs are submitted to the Academy throughout the calendar year. The leaders on the DVD committee determine which titles will be nominated for Saturn Awards. The final list must be approved by the Board. Ballots are mailed to the members who serve on the DVD committee. The winners are invited to the awards show to receive their statuettes.

Alex O’Loughlin: “I Have the Best Fans”

It's all about... Alex O'Loughlin

The depth of the love that Alex O’Loughlin fans have for him never ceases to amaze me. I’ve only been part of this wonderful, diverse and international Alex community for a few short months — thanks to Moonlight — and have met some great people on-line, several of whom have become good friends. I have never seen such dedication and loyalty elsewhere and the level of commitment Alex O’Loughlin fans have is beyond compare. Any Hollywood star – rising or established – would consider themselves lucky with even a fraction of such devotion. Alex himself is very appreciative and says, “I agree, I have the best fans.”

Alex O’Loughlin fans are not a complacent group by any means, who sit around waiting for things to happen. The campaigns and blood drives to renew Moonlight clearly dispel that thought. Vampire solidarity, rah rah rah and all that aside, this transcends Moonlight.

It is, quite simply, all about Alex O’Loughlin.

Alex’s star is on the rise and his fans are doing what they can to contribute to his growing success. Being a fan is a lot of fun and it also takes some commitment. Below are just a few examples of what you can do to support Alex.

“Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” — William James

Internet Movie Database

Head over to IMDb and sign up for a free account. Rate each episode of Moonlight individually as well as the series as a whole and of course also please give a rating for Alex’s other works.

Warner Bros.

Make a habit of going to Alex O’Loughlin’s page at Warner Bros. daily and give him the rating he deserves (I don’t need to tell you how many stars that is ;-)). By clicking on the star on the far right you will keep him at the top of the most viewed actors list. It’s still unclear how the top rated list works, but a response from Warner Bros. will hopefully clarify that, although they are taking their time to reply. Some of the information in Alex’s biography is incorrect as well as the Moonlight blurb. Some of us have pointed this out via the WB feedback form. If enough of us do this, then I’m sure Warner Bros. will see the light and make the corrections necessary. While you’re at Warner Bros., please also rate Moonlight!

Google Alerts

Get yourself a Google mail account and sign up for Google Alerts so that you remain current on the latest web publications relating to Alex O’Loughlin. There are a lot of blogs and websites that publish Alex-related articles and Google will warn you with an email when something new is available. The Internet nowadays is interactive and all about information sharing and collaboration. It’s difficult to find a site that doesn’t permit visitors to leave a response, so you should make use of that. If a site looks like it enjoys a respectable number of visitors, please leave a relevant comment or opinion.

Really Simple Syndication

Many websites and blogs have an RSS feed and it’s easy to subscribe. This will allow you to view the latest content for a particular site with your Yahoo! or Google account, without needing to first go to that site to see what’s happening. Try it out for AlexO’LoughlinRocks.com; just click on the orange “Subscribe to our Feed” icon at the top right of the home page, select the application you wish to subscribe with and then click the “Subscribe Now” button. If you have iGoogle, then you can also set up a permanent Google Blog Search.

MySpace and Long Legs O’Loughlin

Many Alex O’Loughlin fans hang out on MySpace and at Long Legs O’Loughlin (LLOL), where they have the opportunity to set up their own profile page and interact with other admirers of Alex. If you’re a member of LLOL, please make sure that you place an LLOL badge on your MySpace profile and at any other appropriate sites. LLOL is an Alex O’Loughlin centric network and a friendly place to socialize with Alex fans. We not only have the best AOL cyber detectives there, but also a lot of very talented people who create the most amazing artwork and videos. You’re welcome to join us and have some fun!

Alex O’Loughlin on DVD

There are many other places on the web where you can make a difference! Most of Alex’s work is available on DVD, but not all of the on-line stores that sell them, have reviews for each one. DVDs for Moonlight, August Rush, The Shield (Season 6), The Invisible, Mary Bryant, FEED, Man-Thing, BlackJack: Sweet Science and Oyster Farmer can be purchased from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Borders.com and BarnesandNoble.com to name just a few stores. I recently ordered a copy of the US version of FEED on eBay; the seller automatically sent me an invitation to leave a review on his website, which of course I did. The more reviews, the better! And if you can afford it, purchase an Alex DVD not only for yourself, but consider giving them as a gift to friends and family as well.

Music Videos

Making music videos and publishing them on YouTube is a really fun way of expressing yourself and showing your support for Alex! Videos also help keep him in the public eye. If you’re not editing videos yourself, you can certainly still help by leaving a comment and rating other fans’ creations. A compliment is always appreciated by the video editor — creating a good video takes a lot of time and patience — and it encourages others to view the video and leave a comment of their own. An excellent alternative for YouTube is Long Legs O’Loughlin Videos, but of course, there’s nothing to stop you from making use of both sites.

Polls and Lists

Many entertainment sites such as BuddyTV.com and TVGuide.com regularly publish lists of hottest TV stars or vampires, etc. If Alex is not listed at all, please make sure that you leave a comment to let them know how you feel about him being overlooked. If Alex is listed, then of course you should post an appropriate comment. A lot of sites also organize polls for the best vampire, hottest actor, etc. Where appropriate, please participate or leave a comment. For some Moonlight fun, go to the People’s Choice Buzz Polls where you can either create your own polls or complete existing ones. Each poll is up for six days and you can set up a total of nine polls each time. The polls are there for entertainment purposes only, but they do help to keep the Moonlight cast in the public eye.

Last, But Not Least

We all know Alex O’Loughlin is pretty amazing, but Alex himself remains a very modest — and genuinely nice — person. Even if you’re sending him messages and comments via MySpace, please don’t forget to send him a card or letter by snail mail telling him how talented an actor he is and how much you appreciate him. Now that he’s moved on to Criminal Minds and Three Rivers, he may be a little uncertain of how these new roles will be received by his fans, because they are so far removed from Mick St. John and Moonlight. Let him know that he cannot disappoint – ever -  and that we will support him all the way to the top!

Let’s Get Alex O’Loughlin Back on the Late Late Show!

Do you remember when Craig Ferguson had Alex O’Loughlin as a guest on the Late Late Show? That was back in July 2007, a couple of months before Moonlight even premiered on CBS. It was a very entertaining five-and-a-half minutes with Craig at his funniest and Alex keeping up with him very nicely indeed.

Craig: “You’re a crime solving vampire? Does that happen a lot?”

Alex: “Most episodes, yeah.”

Well, we want Alex O’Loughlin back on the Late Late Show! With his episode of Criminal Minds on the horizon, there’s no time like the present to convince Craig and his producers that they want Alex back too. Please take a moment to send an email to Craig Ferguson to let him know what a great idea it would be to have Alex in the show as a guest again!
