Alex O’Loughlin’s Year in Review: 2010

Last year was an eventful and memorable one for Alex O’Loughlin. Although 2009 came to a close with the end of Three Rivers, in 2010 our goodnatured and optimistic Aussie came back with a bang! Here’s a look at last year’s highlights.

January 9 – Nina Tassler tells the TCA members assembled in Pasadena for the Winter Press Tour that Three Rivers is indeed canceled. The head of CBS Entertainment also confirms that the network is still interested in working with Alex O’Loughlin and that it is looking for a new show for him.

While Alex is in Australia enjoying some well-deserved R&R, fans are passing the time by speculating on what his next project might be. The Criminal Minds spinoff and James Patterson’s Private are mentioned.

January 14 - A laid-back Alex, sporting a beard, does a photoshoot for the Sunday Telegraph’s Sunday Magazine on a Sydney rooftop. In a behind-the-scenes video the Aussie shares his thoughts on the downside of fame.

“You don’t necessarily change, but people around you start to change because they think you are going change.”

January 15 – James Hibberd reports in his Live Feed blog that CBS has given the go ahead for a Hawaii Five-0 remake pilot penned by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Peter Lenkov. No other names are mentioned.

January 17 – Three intriguing tweets that have fans on the edge of their seats precede Michael Ausiello’s report on EW.com that “CBS really wants to do another series with him”. More specifically, the network would like to see him as the lead in the recently greenlit Hawaii Five-0 reboot.

February 10 – Ending weeks of nail biting and speculation (and what the actor will later confirm were “lengthy negotiations”), The Hollywood Reporter announces that Alex O’Loughlin has closed a deal with CBS to star as Steve McGarrett in Hawaii Five-0.

:danno:

February 16 – Alex picks up his refinished Sporty from Cro Customs Cycles. He and Cro have provided us with a peek at a side of Alex that we just love and we’re immensely grateful! In his own review of 2010, Cro posts:

By now, most know Alex from the remake of Hawaii 5-0. He’s an Aussie, so when I heard he may be the cat saying “Book em Dano” I told him he better make us Americans proud.

Alex was probably the best client you can have. He knew what he wanted, but allowed me room to throw some “Cro” things in there. He’s an avid 2 wheeler and not a fly by night hipster. Loves riding, and man did he put this bike through the ringer. He rides the piss out of it. To spite the Hollywood gig, he is a stand up dude, works hard, loves bikes and life. It was a pleasure building the bike and making a new friend, and shit, he made a movie with J Lo!! I visited him on set one day, and yes, she is hot!

March 8 – Shooting for the Hawaii Five-0 pilot commences in sunny Oahu! Although CBS has decreed a media blackout, eager fans are able to follow the filming’s progress exceptionally well, thanks to the social media, locals, paparazzi and the Hawaiian press. Unfortunately, the articles posted by the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin are no longer available online since both papers merged into the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in June 2010.

Preparing for a scene in the pilot of 'Hawaii Five-0'

March 11 – The cast is shooting John McGarrett’s funeral scene at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (a.k.a. Punchbowl National Cemetery) and this results in the first paparazzi pictures of Alex as Steve McGarrett. The Lieutenant Commander looks dashingly handsome in his Navy dress blues despite the heat and humidity!

:love2:

March 28 – With the pilot having wrapped on March 27, Alex’s focus is now fully on press and publicity for The Back-up Plan, whose release date of April 21 is drawing near. A multi-day media event kicks off with a portrait session and a Q&A session with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. It marks the start of a publicity offensive that includes Twitter, Facebook, online games, sweepstakes, and even yellow cabs.

April 14-16 – The pre-release activities for The Back-up Plan are in full swing and CBS has arranged five television appearances in New York City for our hottie! Of course, he is also snapped by paparazzi on his first evening in the Big Apple and goodnaturedly signs autographs.

First on his agenda on the 15th is an autograph session for fans followed by an interview on The Early Show. Then, filling in for fellow Aussie and chef Curtis Stone, he joins The Today Show’sGuys Tell All” panel where he has fun answering questions from female viewers.

Up bright and early again the next morning, Alex appears on PIX11 Morning News, whose interviewer shows signs of acute adoritis – and who can blame her? He is also photographed by paparazzi when he arrives and later leaves the studio building. Later that morning he goes on to charm two more TV personalities: The Today Show hosts Kathie Lee and Hoda.

During his stay in NYC, he also tapes an appearance that is captivating and adorable on the Rachael Ray Show. The segment is airs on April 21.

April 19 – Never having been on Jimmy Kimmel Live before, Alex initially seems quite nervous but goes on to give an entertaining and funny interview at the El Capitan Theatre back in Hollywood.

April 20 – Australians in Film organizes a screening of The Back-up Plan at LA’s Harmony Gold Threater and Alex is present to answer questions from the audience afterwards.

Alex faces the photographers lining the red carpet at the US premiere of 'The Back-up Plan'

April 21 – The US premiere of The Back-up Plan is a big day not just for Alex and his leading lady Jennifer Lopez, but also for his fans! Thousands of women have waited impatiently for over a year to see their hero in his first big US feature. Teased by hundreds of photos taken during a month of location shooting in paparazzi-ridden New York City the previous summer and more recently by countless video clips and interviews, fans the world over are excited and anxious. Possibly more so than Alex himself.

Looking relaxed, happy and stylish (“because every cheese farmer is ripped and buff”) in a charcoal Jil Sander suit paired with a striped tie, gold-accented cream shirt and black boots, Alex appears unfazed by the solid wall of paparazzi flanking the red carpet at the Westwood Village Theatre. As considerate as always, he also spends time chatting, signing autographs and posing for pictures for his own fans. After the screening, the festivities continue at the after party at the W Hotel.

April 26 – En route to London for the UK premiere of The Back-up Plan, a smiling and goateed Alex, looking devilishly handsome, is snapped by a paparazzo at LAX for the first time.

April 28 – Alex, Jennifer and director Alan Poul attend The Back-up Plan premiere at London’s famous Leicester Square. Alex, who has never before experienced a London premiere, is surprised at the scale of the reception:

It’s amazing – look at this, I’ve never been on a pink carpet before. It’s wonderful, it’s great to be here. I really appreciate all the fans and all the support. This is incredible!

May 13 – Alex shows up at Australians in Film’s 2010 Breakthrough Awards ceremony held at the Thompson Hotel in Beverly Hills. The event honors actress Bella Heathcote, who is awarded the Heath Ledger Scholarship, and Ryan Kwanten and Chris Hemsworth, who each received a Breakthrough Award.

May 17 – Two days before CBS’s upfront presentation, the news spreads that the network has picked up the Hawaii Five-0 reboot! The feedback from the islands is positive.

May 19 – Alex and his fellow Hawaii Five-0 cast members attend the CBS Upfront at Carnegie Hall and the after party at the Lincoln Center in New York City.

In its primetime schedule release, CBS announces that the show will air on Mondays at 10 pm, bumping CSI: Miami to Sunday nights. This puts Hawaii Five-0 up against Castle and Chase.

After the upfront, the first promos are released online: a BTS preview, and the main title sequence which is later revised for the series premiere. TV promos start airing on the network a few days later.

Alex and 'Hawaii Five-0' cast mates make their first TV appearance on 'The Early Show'

May 20 – The Hawaii Five-0 cast’s first group TV appearance is on The Early Show, where they are interviewed by co-anchor Harry Smith, who calls the reboot a “well thought-out, rocking show” and angles for a guest starring role.

May 22 – Alex and cast mate Daniel Dae Kim represent Hawaii Five-0 at the LA Screenings, where international buyers gather each year to shop for new TV shows. David Poltrack, CBS’s Chief Research Officer, is to say later in the year:

“Hawaii Five-O is a profitable company before syndication based on the network license fee and the international sales for that show, which were huge. It’s already in the black before [we] even hit syndication.”

June 5 – CBS finally broadcasts the original – previously unaired -  pilot of Three Rivers. Four new episodes follow, airing each Saturday at 8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT until the final installment is broadcast on July 3.

Donate Life Hollywood's Person of the Year 2010

June 11 – It is a visibly humbled Alex who steps onto the podium at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills to give his acceptance speech for having been voted Donate Life Hollywood’s Person of the Year. One of five nominees, he was recognized for having worked closely with the national Donate Life campaign to inspire Americans to register as organ and tissue donors, a collaboration that began while Alex was starring on Three Rivers in 2009.

June 24Hawaii News Now reports that Hawaii Five-0 will premiere on September 20, and that locals can enjoy a special Sunset on the Beach screening of the pilot a week earlier, on September 13.

July 15 - For an auspicious run and in honor of its host culture, Hawaii Five-0 kicks off production with a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony on the lawn of the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu. Present are the series stars, the producers, crew and guests. Alex is impressed by the beautiful custom, calling it, “amazing” and “incredible”. Immediately after the blessing, the cast sets to work filming the first episode of the show.

July 22 - CBS announces its fall premiere dates and confirms that Hawaii Five-0 debuts on September 20 – exactly 42 years after the original series premiered.

July 23 – Represented by Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, EPs Peter Lenkov, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and pilot director Len Wiseman, the Hawaii Five-0 Comic-Con panel faces a full and appreciative house in San Diego without Scott Caan and Alex O’Loughlin, who remain behind to film in Hawaii. During the session, Kurtzman speaks highly of Alex and refers to him as “our cornerstone“.

July 28 – Flanked by Scott Caan, Peter Lenkov and Alex Kurtzman, Alex O’Loughlin takes part in the panel at the semi-annual TCA Press Tour in Beverly Hills. The gathering is the opportunity for the assembled media representatives to ask the stars and producers questions about their show prior to the start of the new television season. It always results in a high volume of print and online articles, and today’s session is no exception.

"My name name is Alex O'Loughlin, my character name is Steve McGarrett."

August 3 – “My name name is Alex O’Loughlin, my character name is Steve McGarrett.” With these immortal words, Alex introduces himself in his Hawaii Five-0 video profile!
:sendlove:

September 13 – Months of anticipation culminate in what Governor Linda Lingle proclaims to be “Hawaii Five-0 month”. One of the highlights is surely the local Sunset on the Beach premiere, that draws a crowd of more than 10,000 excited viewers according to Hawaii News Now. Astounded at the turnout and buoyed by the festive atmosphere, Alex admits to feeling “humbled, deeply grateful and really overwhelmed”.

In addition to the cast, crew and producers and their guests, also present at the show’s “biggest screen test” are Governor Linda Lingle and acting Mayor of Honolulu Kirk Caldwell, the three daughters of the original show’s creator Leonard Freeman, as well as two stars from the first series, Al Harrington and Jimmy Borges.

The pilot is very well received and all stakeholders can breathe a sigh of relief.

Alex at CBS's Fall Season Premiere Party in LA

September 16 – With just four days till premiere night, Alex is back in LA to do promotion for the series, including taping The Ellen DeGeneres Show – another first for the Aussie – and an interview with Extra at The Grove. In the evening, he makes an appearance at The Colony, where CBS hosts its 2010 Fall Season Premiere party.

September 20 – Numerous entertainment shows precede the nation-wide premiere of Hawaii Five-0 with interview segments and clips from the pilot. Of course, The Early Show airs a feature and Ellen DeGeneres broadcasts her interview with the new Steve McGarrett.

The highly anticipated pilot episode draws an initial audience of 14.2 million viewers and scores a rating of 3.9 in the key demographic of viewers age 18-49. A very solid start for a reboot that drew some initial skepticism. These figures are later boosted by a record number of DVR viewings and Hawaii Five-0 goes down in the history books as the most DVR’ed show ever. Viewership figures hit the 17.5 million mark and the final rating for the pilot is… 5.0.

Kono: “I like that. Five-oh.

October 13 – With the rights to air Hawaii Five-0 having been purchased across the globe (an unverified 200 countries has been mentioned), the production opens its doors to the international press in Honolulu’s old post office building, where the task force’s HQ set is located.

Markets where the series is already airing or is confirmed to air are: Asia (AXN), Australia (Ten), Latin America (Liv) and Europe (including the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, France, Spain and Portugal).

October 21 – CBS announces via a press release that all five of its new shows are getting a full season order, including Hawaii Five-0 that has so far averaged 14.2 million viewers and a 4.1 A18-49 rating. Nina Tassler states:

“Everything has clicked so far this year—from development in January, to scheduling in May, to production over the summer, to marketing and publicity in the fall. It’s all testimony to the executives in our halls who remain restless for more success, and the amazing creative talent on our sets who continue to deliver the goods.”

November 12People includes Alex in its 100 Sexy Men lineup, leading up to the annual selection of the Sexiest Man Alive.

November 30 – According to Nielsen’s Live+7 stats, Hawaii Five-0 broke its own DVR playback record set by the pilot in premiere week. Mana’o, episode 1.07, was viewed on DVR by 3.498 million people, which is 121,000 more viewers than the pilot.

December 7 – A post on Examiner.com reveals that Alex has adopted a 6-month-old Australian Border Collie mix puppy that he found in a junkyard while shooting Hawaii Five-0. He has named the cutie Reggie, after his grandfather.

December 13 – The last new Hawaii Five-0 episode of the year airs on CBS. Based on the first 12 installments (including the pilot), “TV’s #1 new show” draws an average weekly audience of 14.58 million, 3.2 million of whom watch the series on their DVRs. The show’s average A18-49 rating is a very competitive 4.2. It is one of three new shows that made it to the year’s top 20 and it is the most popular of the season’s new offerings, according to a New York Times article based on Nielsen statistics.

"What we’ve done with this show is innovative and exciting and fantastic. If Jack Lord were here I hope he’d feel the same way."

December 22 – Shooting for the first year wraps today and the cast and crew can enjoy a well-deserved break until the first week of January. Meanwhile, fans are casting multiple votes for Hawaii Five-0 as the People’s Choice for “Favorite New TV Drama”.

Everyone is hopeful that the series will be renewed for a second season, but the best message of 2010 is that Alex O’Loughlin now has the hit show he deserves!

With special thanks to: the faithful visitors of this site (your comments, tips and feedback are greatly appreciated), the ladies at Hawaii Five-o Fans, Nadioz, CBS, and last but never least, Skylar (Go MSP!) and AM for keeping me motivated and inspired. May 2011 be your best year yet!

Hawaii Five-0 Updates

  • Both HitFix and Buddy TV have a poll going for the fall show we’re most excited about, so please head over to both sites and vote for Hawaii Five-0! The HitFix poll is on their home page, in the far right column.
  • Collider posted a video interview with Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci recently at the 2010 Saturn Awards. They discuss Hawaii Five-0 at 5:50, when the EPs talk about whether the show will have any mythology or whether the episodes will be standalone:

Kurtzman: “There will be some mythology, it will be a standalone show. So you will be able to drop into the show at any time. We start prepping in a week and a half, we start shooting in three weeks. It’s been pretty amazing breaking script with them. It feels great.”

Orci: “You’ve got to know how to do a show with a larger world view; it’s only how fast it reveals itself.”

  • If you don’t mind the entire plot of the Hawaii Five-0 pilot being revealed to you before it airs, head over to Mike Quigley’s site where he shares a blow-by-blow of the pilot screener. Keep in mind that Mike and the majority of his site visitors are die-hard fans of the original show when you read his post and take it from me that the screener version is absolutely riveting. The pilot views like a fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping, action-packed movie even on a computer monitor. And a word of warning, ladies: be prepared to fall head-over-heels in love with Lt.Cmdr. Stephen J. McGarrett and his  team.

Hawaii Five-0 Articles & Buzz

  • It’s never before occurred to me that Alex O’Loughlin could be considered a cult icon, because he is so much more than just Mick St. John (with all due respect to that wonderful character), but then it’s all a matter of perspective. To hear John Kubicek at Buddy TV call him that is kind of strange and pretty cool :

Remakes are almost always bad, so why should this one be any different? Just look at the cast: Moonlight‘s Alex O’Loughlin, Battlestar Galactica‘s Grace Park and Lost‘s Daniel Dae Kim. It’s like the casting director was replaced by a random nerd from Comic-Con, which is great for me. Getting three established TV cult icons on one show is definitely a promising sign.

  • Sidereel:

Why Watch? It promises to bring the nostalgia of a revived old favorite (which worked great for 90210, not so great for Melrose Place (2009)), and the excitement of an amped-up modern cop show, while also managing to throw in plenty of shirtless scenes for those who are just in it for the beach bodies (we don’t judge).

  • From Ben Wood, a columnist at the Honolulu Star Advertiser:

CBS will air its “Hawaii Five-0″ remake in the fall, a very mod version with Alex O’Loughlin as Steve McGarrett and Scott Caan as Danno Williams. I knew Jack well enough for him to come to a couple of parties at my residence, and when I first saw clips of the new McGarrett and Danno, unshaven and wearing wrinkled, rugged street attire, the first thing I thought was, “Straight-laced Jack must be turning over in his grave.” He always wore a suit and looked sharp, as did other members of his “Five-0″ team. Years ago when “Five-0″ was on the air, I was in London, and the show’s theme was played during the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. After the ceremony I caught a cab, and when the driver found out I was from Hawaii, he asked whether I knew Jack Lord. When I said yes, he said, “Tell him to get a British tailor.” I told Jack the story, and he gave me a wry smile. Jack didn’t care for criticism. Anyway, no matter what the actors wear, the new “Five-0″ looks as if it is going to be a fast-paced, explosive, action-packed show. I hope it will be a winner, even if there’s a nude scene. Forgive me, Jack …

  • Entertainment journalist Bryan Reesman considers Hawaii Five-0 a guilty pleasure:

I shouldn’t like this show — especially as remakes and reboots usually annoy me — but I do. Original series star Jack Lord may be rolling over in his grave as I admit that. (He might even be screaming from beyond, “Book ‘em, Danno!” to my confession of this guilty pleasure.) Yet while other upcoming cop shows this fall are going for a grittier look at the world of law enforcement — ABC’s Detroit 1-8-7 and CBS’ Blue Bloods, specifically — CBS’ reimagined Hawaii Five-O is over-the-top, super adrenalized…and a lot of fun.

Having a cast that includes Alex O’Loughlin (Moonlight), Scott Caan (the Oceans Eleven movies), Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) and Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica) — helps sell this one. In fact, it is their likability and interplay that makes this so pleasurable to watch. And O’Loughlin (the new Steve McGarrett) doing many of his own stunts is impressive, too.

Take a sneak peek at the trailer below and see for yourself. I’ve seen a “rough cut” of the pilot — brash Iron Man-style opening and all — and it’s slick, smart, high octane entertainment. We’ll see where it goes from there. I expect big ratings at the outset. It will hopefully debut in September.

  • BuzzSugar is also catching up (get in line, lady… ):

Why it caught my attention: Reboots are always buzz-y, so I’ll be watching to see if this one can live up to the hype. And there’s also the fact that Alex O’Loughlin takes his shirt off in the preview. I might be in love.

Show most likely to: Have the best visual backdrop and gorgeous scenery.

  • From a Dearborn, Michigan newspaper, the Times-Herald:

Q: Will James MacArthur, who played Danno in the original “Hawaii Five-0,” have any part in the new show? — Jim S., Punta Gorda, Fla.

A: Mr. MacArthur is relishing his retirement, playing golf and tennis, doing a little traveling and enjoying spending time with his family. He divides his time between his homes in Southern California and Hawaii. Currently, there are no plans for his participation in the new “Hawaii Five-0.” When I contacted him recently, he told me: “I wish the new team much success and look forward to seeing what they’ll do with the franchise.”

AOLR Weekly Wrap-Up #47

Hawaii Five-0 updates:

  • Tim Ryan blogs that the Waikiki Marriott will be the temporary HQ for the Hawaii Five-0 production. (As you know, after Lost wrapped ABC continued to rent the Hawaii Film Studio for its new series Off the Map.) He also adds that Rachel Sutton is now H50′s Hawaii casting director – she held the same position on Lost.
  • The Show Girl added another snippet from a previous phone interview with Daniel Dae Kim to a recent video.

Hawaii Five-0 articles & buzz:

  • Jean Smart recently had a long interview with Bullz-Eye and a small mention was made of Hawaii Five-0:

BE: Well, I’m sure we’re coming up against the wall here, but…I know you’re in the pilot for “Hawaii Five 0,” but are you anticipating being a regular on the show?

JS: No, I can’t be a regular, because I’d have to move to Honolulu. (Laughs) But I’m going to be doing a recurring role, yes.

BE: Were you a fan of the original series?

JS: Oh, sure. Who wasn’t? Absolutely.

  • Neely Swanson, (former?) SVP at (David) Kelley Productions and teacher for the USC School of Cinematic Arts’s film and TV writing program posted an interview with former Moonlight executive producer Chip Johannessen. Swanson is apparently not convinced that Alex has been cast correctly as McGarrett, but Johannessen has only good things to say about him.

Chip: In defense of “Hawaii 5-0,” anything with Alex O’Loughlin is worth trying. I worked with him on “Moonlight” and he’s pretty great.

Neely: I guess CBS is hoping this will fall into the category of “the third time is a charm.” I must say, though, and I did say it in an article I wrote for Baseline Studio System, I liked the pilot script of “Hawaii 5-0” and I’m actually looking forward to seeing that pilot. It’s a very expensive, but really good action piece. On paper it works and if CBS doesn’t spare the expense it will work on screen. My impression of Alex O’Loughlin is that he’s a heart throb and may be too soft to play Steve McGarrett. It might have been better (and they would never have considered this for any one of a number of reasons) to cast Scott Caan as Steve and Alex as Danny. I could very well be wrong.

Chip: Yeah, they wouldn’t do that. But honestly, I love Alex O’Loughlin. He might be a little soft, but I have to say that in “Moonlight” he had this impossible task and he really delivered amazingly well. He had to show a lot of colors when he transformed into this aggressive vampire. He was great. He’s a real actor, that guy.

  • Stana Katic, Castle star, to The TV Addict on the time slot competition Hawaii Five-0 will bring in the fall:

This season CASTLE will get a new time slot competitor in CBS’ much-anticipated reboot of HAWAII FIVE-O. Have you given any thought to it and are you at all concerned about the competition?
“Well you know I think the viewers that have created an allegiance to CASTLE are there for a reason. Something like HAWAII FIVE-O is a different show entirely and I think we’re going after different audiences. That said, I’m sure producers are aware of it, they’re all smart people. And if CASTLE is capable — at least from my understanding — of bouncing of CSI: MIAMI that means it has got some legs and I’m sure that will help us sustain its own sort of audience.”

  • Some good feedback from foreign buyers who were at the LA Screenings in May posted by WorldScreen:

CBS’s Hawaii Five-O reboot was among the shows cited by a number of buyers as having strong potential. “We thought Hawaii Five-O was very good, and it’s a genre that hasn’t been done in a while,” says Francesco Mozzetti, the head of acquisitions and sales at Italy’s leading commercial broadcaster, Mediaset, of the CBS Studios International show starring Alex O’Loughlin and Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim. Rüdiger Böss, the head of acquisitions at the ProSiebenSat.1 Group, was also impressed with the series, along with another CBS show, the legal dramedy The Defenders with Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell. “We have already secured the rights to these series,” says Böss. Roxanne Barcelona, the VP of GMA Worldwide, the acquisitions and sales arm of Filipino broadcaster GMA Network, was a fan of the original Hawaii Five-O and notes, “This remake did not disappoint me, as the pilot script was very well written, production quality was very good, and there was a lot of action.”

“The CBS series Hawaii Five-O does have potential,” concurs Dirk Schweitzer, the executive VP of program acquisitions and sales at RTL Television. “The pilot, however, was produced very expensively, and it remains to be seen whether the quality of the series [can meet] expectations.

  • David Rancken at Dallas’s 103.7 Lite FM posted this about the pilot:

“The remake of Hawaii 5-0 is really really good. Action packed. Great cast. Alex O’Laughlin is a great Steve McGarrett. Scott Caan is Danno. Daniel Day Kim is Chin Ho. Great first episode.”

  • A UK reviewer for Cambs24 (Cambridgeshire) who wrote about The A-Team movie has a convoluted way of saying that our pilot rocks:

“There is also the upcoming remake of Hawaii Five-0 that’s out later this year on US television networks, starring Jin from Lost. I saw the pilot of this the other day and this looks like it breaks the mould in terms of dreadful remakes.”

  • Matt Mitovich and Julie Zied at FanCast share their opinion on the pilot:

What Works: I wanted to start our First Look series on a high, and ‘Five-O’ is one of this season’s most entertaining pilots. The Hawaii setting is of course gorgeous (even if it perhaps gives ‘Lost’ vet Kim flashbacks to The Island!), and the cast is among TV’s most telegenic. The task force’s first assignment is sufficiently engaging, even as it works to set up the series’ premise and intro the players. Jean Smart (’24?) is the Hawaii governor who taps McGarrett for this plum gig, while James Marsters (’Buffy’s Spike) guest-stars as a nasty (and hopefully recurring) baddie. And yes – the theme song is the same, with near-identical visuals in the opening credits.

What Needs Work: In this his third CBS series, O’Loughlin isn’t “popping” as much as he did sporting ‘Moonlight’ fangs, but that could balance nicely with Caan’s Danno, who is one entertainingly quippy cop. Also, the pilot screams expensive, kicking off with a literally explosive sequence that introduces McGarrett’s demons; it’ll be interesting to see how they maintain that quality on a weekly basis.

Take Two, from Fancast’s Julie Zied: Given that I often regard procedurals as background filler best viewed while occupied with other tasks, I was surprised by how instantly captivating this pilot was. O’Loughlin shines as the cocksure pack leader, and his exchanges with his reluctant partner are some of the show’s wittiest. (“You let your daughter sleep here?” McGarrett asks upon seeing Danny’s shabby pad. “Who are you, Nanny 911?” Danny retorts.) As the series progresses, I’m curious to learn more about Jin’s Chin’s shady past and what happened between Danny and his ex that led him to set her ringtone to ‘Grim Reaper.’ I also look forward to the inevitable fan debate over which eligible bachelor – Danny or McGarrett – Kono should sleep with. Bottom line? Beautiful cast + solid writing + exotic scenery = a series poised to give ‘NCIS’ a run for its money as CBS’ most popular drama.

The Fancast Forecast: ‘Castle’ may wish that ‘CSI: Miami’ had stayed put.

  • Hawaii’s KITV4 News has an article and video about TV and film productions that are helping to put Hawaii on the map: “New ABC TV Series Filmed in Hawaii”.

The Back-up Plan updates:

  • A short video with some footage of the cast at the LA premiere was posted by Celebrity Footage.
  • The Back-up Plan has been nominated for a Teen Choice Award 2010 in the category “Romantic Comedy”! Strangely enough, although Jennifer is nominated in the category “Actress – Romantic Comedy”, Alex is nowhere to be found. Only US residents between 13-19 are permitted to vote. Voting is limited to once per day per category and closes on August 6th.

Other updates:

  • Carol Barbee was presented with a Donate Life Hollywood Inspire Award as well as a Crystal Heart Award for Three Rivers at the Donate Life Hollywood Inspire Awards dinner on June 12th in Beverly Hills. Glenn Matsuki has posted a lovely video of Carol’s acceptance of both honors on the Donate Life Organ & Tissue Donation Blog. Dr. Gonzo spoke at the ceremony and Alex also adds his congratulations at 1:19:

“Carol, congratulations on everything. I love you so much, it’s so wonderful working with you, we’re about to work together again and all the hard work and dedication and passion and honesty and beauty you put into the show called Three Rivers that I was so proud to be a part of, it’s paid off. Congratulations! I love you.”

  • Sabine Atkins posted some more great photos from the Donate Life Hollywood event and shares an amusing account of her meet & greet with Alex! Check out: “Alex O’Loughlin’s Guide to Proper Gift Giving”.
  • Deadline Hollywood reports that Alex has switched agencies – he is now represented by United Talent Agency. The post suggests that he may have made the change in order to stay with Chris Hart:

Alex O’Loughlin left ICM for UTA. (Chris Hart was on his team, and the agent just jumped from ICM to UTA.)

  • Alex appeared in a fashion feature in the July issue of Madison magazine with photos shot by Carlotta Moye. You can view some scans on the Sassi Sam blog; I’ll be posting HQ scans in the gallery this coming week.

Gallery updates:

  • A small article from an internal CBS publication was added with a picture of Alex and Daniel Dae Kim at the recent LA Screenings.
  • More images from the June 11th Donate Life Hollywood cocktail party have been added, including some lovely images by Susan Whitney.
  • Added The Back-up Plan posters from Hungary, Poland, Israel and a French version of the first poster.

So, this short update is the result of a “quiet” week… We can expect to have a couple more as the show doesn’t start shooting till mid July. Hopefully CBS will announce the premiere dates for the fall shows in the next two weeks. Things will start revving up as we approach the TCA Summer Tour early August and then I expect it will be non-stop action until Christmas. Enjoy the peace and quiet while you can!

Carol Barbee to Receive Two Awards for “Three Rivers”

According to a press release issued today by Donate Life Hollywood, Carol Barbee, creator of Three Rivers, will be receiving a Donate Life Hollywood Inspire Award as well as a Crystal Heart Award for the 2009 medical drama’s contribution to raising donor awareness.

The influence of the show starring Alex O’Loughlin, Kate Moennig, Daniel Henney, Alfre Woodard, Justina Machado and Christopher Hanke was such that at least four families consented to organ donation during the period that the initial eight episodes aired in the US last fall.

A national survey initiated by Donate Life America and pharmaceutical company Astellas shows a six percent increase in adults’ willingness to register as organ donors, which can possibly be attributed to Three Rivers.

“Donate Life Hollywood worked closely with the creator Carol Barbee who had a keen interest in assuring that her show did not harm and helped when it could. The result is that the show saved lives,” says Donate Life Hollywood campaign director Tenaya Wallace.

Both awards will be presented to Ms. Barbee on June 12th during the Donate Life Hollywood Inspire Awards dinner and ceremony in Beverly Hills.

The Inspire Award is presented annually for accurate and inspiring organ donation storylines on television and in film. The Crystal Heart Award will be presented jointly by the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations and the Coalition on Donation. Sponsored by the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation, it is awarded annually to the most effective media broadcast in America.

Other Inspire Award winners this year include an episode of Army Wives, an episode of Undercover Boss, two episodes of Extreme Makeover Home Edition and an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Three Rivers was also the recipient of Donate Life Hollywood’s first Inspire Award in June 2009 for the medical accuracy and inspiration of its pilot episode.
