Peter Lenkov Names Fan Base Among Season’s Highlights

Our favorite Executive Producer, Peter Lenkov, looks back on Season 2 of Hawaii Five-0 with XFINITY TV!

The highlights: a “mind blowing cliffhanger” in the finale, the “incredible core fan base”, his pride in his cast and crew and his favorite episode…

Take us inside your approach to the finale, and what you wanted to accomplish.
My approach was very simple: Outdo what we did last year. Take the audience on the ride of their life… and end up on a mind blowing cliffhanger. And all I can say on the eve of shooting the finale: Mission Accomplished.

Did anything disappoint you about this season? Anything you wish you could have done, but didn’t have the time, forethought or resources?
Not sure I can put my finger on anything disappointing. We worked very hard this year to build on the momentum of last season… tell better stories, explore the islands, get to know our characters better. And I think every challenge we threw at our cast and crew they met with incredible results. I’d love for us to continue to grow our audience. We have an incredible core fan base, hardcore 5-0 fanatics, and I hope they can help spread the word to those who haven’t seen the show yet.

What should fans look forward to next season? And if you haven’t gotten that far yet…what would your dream season be?
We’re continuing to expand our family in big ways. One is the addition of Michelle Borth joining us full time for season 3. We’re also planning some big stories, fun mind boggling mysteries, trips to other islands … and have already sat down with our stunt team to discuss some cool action for next year.

What were the high points of the season?
Fan reaction is top of the list. The following we have has really made the job fun. It’s exciting to see the feedback in real time and on Tuesday mornings… and it seems by that reaction that we’ve done our job this year. As far as high points, I think the season as a whole, I truly think we got better with each episode. I’m so proud of our cast and crew.

Do you have a favorite episode, line, or scene from this season? If so, what?
I love ‘em all. I truly do. If I didn’t, I couldn’t do this job right. But if I had to pick, I mean, if McGarrett had me in the rendition room cuffed to the chair and I was forced to answer, I’d probably say the end of episode 210 — seeing our family come together to save McGarrett, then ride off into the sunset on that chopper, I literally had tears in my eyes. Again, it made me feel as if we all had done a great job developing these characters. I felt these people truly did care for one another… that they were Ohana [extended family], and that nothing would tear them apart. Kudos to our actors — they make us care.

Hawaii Five-0 Articles
  • Christa Wittmier wrote in her Honolulu Weekly column about the Season 2 wrap party held on April 22 at Cycle City:

The only night I managed to get anywhere was Sunday, which was one for the books. Cycle City hosted one of the best wrap parties yet that Hawaii Five-0 has had. I didn’t even know you could do events there. They are pros. The place was transformed. Hogs were moved off the motorcycle showroom floors and replaced with cocktail tables and a stage. Anuhea jammed to a hugely receptive crowd of almost 500 guests and I found myself spending way too much time staring across the room at an extremely attractive Alex O’Loughlin, laughing and talking with his crew. I remember the first time I met him and he turned my hand over after shaking it to look at the tattoo on my wrist. He kept holding my hand as I told him how each star represented a different country that I had traveled to, and I found myself drawing out the story as long as I could so he wouldn’t let go. That is one sexy man. Grace Park, Masi Oka, Taylor Willy and Daniel Dae Kim were also there with Executive Producer Peter Lenkrov to celebrate the wrap of Season 2. For two years in a row, the scheduling was not in their favor as they all had to go to work super early the next morning but it didn’t stop them from dancing their faces off until the very end. I seriously love those party monsters. Congratulations on a great second season. I can’t wait to see who comes out to guest-star for Season 3 (please bring back Reggie; please bring back Reggie).

  • TV Guide ran a great article about the crossover in their April 30-May 6 issue, scans of which were kindly donated by Pinkie! The article was also posted on TVGuide.com as was a video of the photoshoot; both should get you in the mood for the two-parter.
  • The New York Post also featured both shows in an article about crossovers, with NCIS: LA showrunner Shane Brennan providing interesting highlights:

While the timing was a no-brainer for each show’s show’s writing staff, capturing the established attitude and cadence of the guest stars was more complicated.

Both audiences have to say, “‘Yeah, that’s our guys!’ ” Brennan says. “They can’t walk in [to the other series] and not be the characters that fans have come to know.”

To work around that, the two series asked their writers to do a little crossover of their own — “riding shotgun” and getting writing credits on each other’s series.

“To keep it true to those characters [who crossed over],” Brennan adds, the two shows also “broke the stories, outlined and worked on the scripts together.”

The only thing that nearly got lost in translation between the shows was wardrobe.

“At one point, Callen and Sam were going to be [wearing] Hawaiian shirts,” Brennan recalls with a chuckle. “I said, ‘No, I don’t think that’s going to work for our audience.’ ”

  • Craig Robert Young, whose nefarious scheming as Dracul Comescu causes an uproar in Oahu on tonight’s first crossover episode, talks with Five-0 Undercover about his projects and about appearing on both shows and being in Hawaii:

How bad a baddie is Dracul and when did you first learn you’d be taking Dracul to Hawaii?
I don’t think Dracul is that bad, he’s more power hungry and that’s just a product of the family he was born into and the environment he was raised in.  All this is just normal work for him.  There was a rumor at the start of 2012 when my agent called me and said that it may be happening, but I don’t like to hold my breath. Things change and fall through all the time in this town.

Did you get the feeling there will be more crossovers in the future?  And how did the stars of the two shows get along – did you see chemistry on set?
I honestly don’t know what CBS has in store for the shows – I think crossovers definitely make it exciting.  Makes shows seem more real in a way.  The cast for both are awesome. Everyone was very professional.

Now that you’ve worked on both shows, how does the vibe on the two shows compare?
Well location on Hawaii Five-0 didn’t suck that’s for sure. As for “vibe” I think the guys on NCIS:LA win that one only because I’ve worked more with them.  Sorry! Plus Alex O’Loughlin wasn’t around either.

How did you like working in Hawaii?
I had been to Hawaii a few times before, once to shoot “Lost” but this time was better ’cause I got a little time off and was able to discover the island.  I swam with dolphins at Sea Life Park,  I went up to the north shore, I went to the Doris Duke house and visited Pearl Harbor.  I ate Hawaiian regional cuisine at Alan Wong’s restaurant and Morimoto’s — what’s not to love about Hawaii?   And the people are awesome too – so friendly and have a great sense of fun.

  • TV|Line shares some scoop about the crossover event (and it’s just as well that Steve is otherwise occupied this week…   :giggle:   ):
    Spoiler Alert! Show
  • Scoop shared by TV Guide about the final episode this season allows you to cross quite a few people off the season finale death list! It sounds like Steve will have his work cut out for him in Season 3 though:
    Spoiler Alert! Show
  • According to Mike Gordon, SOTB3 is not a certainty this year:

“HAWAII FIVE-0″ wrapped up its second season at about 5 a.m. Thursday after an all-night shoot, but the episode will likely keep the production team busy right up to the May 14 air date.

The cast is expected back sometime in July.

CBS said last week that no decision has been made about whether to host another Sunset on the Beach premiere.

The network delighted fans at the start of the show’s first two seasons by screening the season premiere ahead of the network’s prime-time air date. Thousands of fans flocked to Waikiki to see “Five-0″ and catch the red-carpet arrivals of the stars.

Devon Nekoba: Local Actor Shares Five-0 Set Experience

Wendie Burbridge puts another local thespian in the spotlights on her entertaining Five-0 Redux blog!

This week we meet Devon Nekoba, who plays the TSA agent McGarrett and Danny meet at the airport after Mary is arrested for diamond smuggling in episode 2.19. The amiable actor and radio DJ landed his first TV show gig on Hawaii Five-0 after six casting calls and his story proves that although good things come to those who wait, great things come to those who work hard to make it happen.

Nekoba shares his Five-0 set experience enthusiastically with Wendie and the following excerpt is about working with Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan:

“I didn’t know what to expect,” he said, but he definitely felt the pressure to do well and represent Hawaii on set. He said the cast and crew were the “nicest people—top notch,” and he was amazed by the simple things — having his own trailer, his character name on the door, having his own chair (marked “Cast,” but he was seated right next to Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan, so he wasn’t going to complain!), and a full craft service table for his three hours on set. He met all of the cast — even members he was not in scenes with, like Grace Park and Taryn Manning, as well as O’Loughlin and Caan.

Said Nekoba, “I had a hard time trying to balance myself — to be professional and to do well, all the while I’m thinking ‘Oh, my God, I’m on Hawaii Five-0!’”

Filming the two minute scene with O’Loughlin and Caan was interesting, he said. It was very fast, and no matter how long he had spent preparing his lines, envisioning what he would do, and how he would act, in his mind, it was completely nervewracking when Nekoba actually executed it in front of the cameras with McGarrett and Danno.

“I was practically running after Alex (in the scene) because he walks so fast,” he said. But after a few takes, Nekoba started to feel more comfortable — or at least that is what I saw when I watched him on television. He said O’Loughlin and Caan had a “nice rapport together” and that Caan’s dog, Dot, was “always with him.” He said there was little tension on the set, besides having to get the job done.

When I asked him what was the most interesting thing about his day, Nekoba told me about encountering Alex O’Loughlin for the first time. When he was about to head toward the set, he saw O’Loughlin waiting by a van and thought, “I’m going to ride with Alex?” When Devon got closer, O’Loughlin put out his hand and said, “Hi, I’m Alex.”

“I kept my cool, and said ‘Hi, I’m Devon,’ but I was thinking ‘Um, DOH, of course you are Alex,” he said. It was that kind of open attitude that helped him stay cool most of the day. Once they were in the van, Alex asked him “Hey, do you want to run lines?” and so they spent the van ride to the airport, where the set was, preparing for their scene together.

It might amuse Devon to know that Alex experienced the same “Oh, my God” response when he found himself working on The Shield and on Criminal Minds:giggle:

Fun fact: from stories shared by people lucky enough to have met him, it appears our Aussie always introduces himself by saying, quite simply, “Hi, I’m Alex.”

The good fortune for Devon doesn’t end with episode 2.19. TSA Agent Myers gets to return in the crossover event and it sounds like it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy!

Hawaii Five-0 Articles
  • EW provides more insight into tonight’s new episode of Hawaii Five-0 which centers around Max:

‘HAWAII FIVE-0′: MASI OKA ON REVEALING MAX EPISODE
If like me you hold a geeky love for Dr. Max Bergman on Hawaii Five-0, you’ll definitely want to check out Monday’s episode, which promises to provide new perspective on the medical examiner. Tthe team finds themselves tracking a killer whose methods match up to those of an incarcerated serial killer called Trash Man. But with so many similarities in style, they find themselves beginning to wonder if the alleged Trash Man in jail is indeed the correct one. Further complicating matters? The killer’s history with Max (Masi Oka). “It’s sort of an interesting twist,” says Oka.

For Oka, one of the biggest surprises was the fact that Max’s history was going to be explored at all. “I didn’t anticipate it. I know we discussed it because it’s hard to ignore the fact that his last name is Bergman, and I don’t really look like a Bergman,” he says. “I love that they did that because you knew they planned to justify it later on. In this day and age, when you see an Asian character, you give him an Asian last name. So big props to [executive producer Peter Lenkov]. It was great to see that in an episode and be able to go through that journey.”

  • Masi also chats with extensively with none other than The Hollywood Reporter about his big episode and gets us excited about the season finale too! Check out the full article at THR.
  • As I surmised in the wrap-up two weeks ago, Craig Robert Young is indeed reprising his NCIS: LA role of Dracul Comescu in the crossover event; this was confirmed by LA-based British journalist Sean Borg in a recent blog post:

Now, in a clever attempt to capture both audiences, NCIS: LA – the number two highest-rated scripted show on U.S television has teamed up with hit series Hawaii Five-O, bringing back Dracul Comescu with a plot involving a virus outbreak which will potentially be weaponized. And beyond telling you that, my lips are super-glued!

O’Donnell and Cool J will appear on “Five-O” for one episode, while in a separate episode, Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) and Danny Williams (Scott Caan) will star on “NCIS.”

The crossover occurs over two episodes in late April thru early May, during sweeps week when networks collect data on a shows’ popularity and determine its future.

Show-runner Peter Lenkov revealed that the characters are already familiar with each other: “Chris and LL are going to come to Hawaii . . . There’s a bit of history there.”

Craig Robert Young’s popular character is sure to get his comeuppance on “Five-O” and finally viewers will see this nail-biting saga come to and end once and for all… Or will they?

Young’s spokesperson, Louisa Spring confirmed, “Yes, Craig is returning to the role and the script is amazing, but I can’t say anymore than that.”

  • Some scenes in the crossover episode, 2.21, were filmed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on March 26, making it the third time this season that the show is shot there. From an article posted by the 15th Wing Public Affairs team:

The professionalism and bearing of the military members involved contributed to the success of the show, according to Elwood Reid, co-executive producer of Hawaii Five-0.

“Our costume people can copy your uniform exactly, we can give the [actors] the haircuts, but the bearing you guys have in the military, you can’t buy,” Reid said. “There’s just a certain way that you guys look and hold yourselves that we can’t teach.”

The extras, who were asked to perform their regular, day-to-day jobs for the crew to film, now have a chance of appearing in the episode’s final cut.

“It was a pretty unique experience seeing how they actually film and put it all together,” said Army Sgt. 1st Class James Sturdivant, 93rd CST. “Plus it is great to represent the Hawaii Army National Guard. It was pretty cool. I enjoyed it.”

The scene was filmed on the flightline at DV1, an aircraft parking spot normally reserved for distinguished guests. A 535th Airlift Squadron C-17 Globemaster III was specifically positioned nearby for a cameo in the scene. When the cameras began to roll, the extras filled the frame by, per the director’s command, performing their regular jobs and representing their units.

“I know the actors feel a lot more comfortable here in this environment than when we’re shooting downtown,” said Patrick Dawn, production assistant for the show. “Personally, it’s a great pleasure working with the military. I have a great respect for the military and everything that it represents. It’s so cool to be around it.”

The more than 50-man film crew shot the scenes in less than three hours. Each scene included Scott Caan, a main character of Hawaii Five-0, as well as LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell, actors from the show “NCIS: Los Angeles.”

“Everyone has been very helpful with all of our requests,” Dawn said. “It is different than what we often encounter. [The military] is going out of their way to accommodate us, and the hospitality is so welcoming. It really makes our job easier.”

  • Mark Deklin has been doing a lot of promotion for his new show GBC and in two of his interviews he talks about playing Step-Stan on Hawaii Five-0. The first item is from The Morton Report and the second is an excerpt from The Hollywood Reporter:
    • In addition to GCB, Deklin can also be seen in the recurring role of Stan Edwards on Hawaii Five-0. “When Lone Star was cancelled, this was a nice way to bounce back,” he says. “Some of the creative people on Hawaii Five-0 had seen my work on Lone Star and said, ‘He’d be right for the role of Sam (sic).’ I worked mainly with Scott Caan [Danny “Danno” Williams], who’s a nice guy, very welcoming and a real gentleman, and Claire van der Boom, who played Stan’s wife Rachel. She’s just lovely and a gem of a woman. So it was a very pleasant time doing some good work with nice people.”

    • THR: Are there any plans to reprise your recurring character on Hawaii Five-0?
Deklin: I’m not privy to their meetings as far as what they have in mind for Stan, so any answer I give you is just conjecture on my part. But I think a lot of it depends on GCB. They stopped writing for my character when I booked the pilot. That’s when Stan kind of took a back seat and I didn’t do any episodes last year while I was shooting GCB. I didn’t go to Hawaii at all, and then right around the time we were wrapping the season we got a call asking if I would come out to Hawaii to do a couple episodes, which is great. I’m very grateful that they’ve called me back and the problem is CBS has to ask ABC for clearance every time they want to use me. I’m sure that’s a pain in the ass and kind of annoying, and I understand that.Where we left off in Hawaii Five-0 is that Scott Caan’s character had the great pleasure of shooting me, but not killing me. So, I think it would be very easy for them to go either way with that. I think they could easily bring him back if they want to, but they could also make him go away. I think a lot of it will depend on the success of GCB and whether or not we get picked up for a second season. And you know what? However it works out, it’s a really nice problem to have.

  • Wendie Burbridge takes a closer look at the women of Hawaii Five-0 in her latest, insightful Five-0 Redux post:

I’ve said it before — this season has been a roller coaster of storylines and emotions for many characters, as well as for the actors off-camera. It has not been an easy, yet I cannot wait to see how the ladies of “Five-0? work out in season three. I don’t want to lose any more of n? w?hine, as I don’t think I can take another dead lady. I watched Laura Hills explode (Kelly Hu’s departure at the end of season one) and Jenna Kaye be shot in cold blood, so I’m hoping we don’t lose another lady in the season finale next month.

To potential new “Hawaii Five-0” female cast members, I wish you good luck in joining this team, but you definitely need fair warning — it’s not always a smooth ride.

  • Episode updates:
    • Peter Lenkov confirmed on Twitter that Alex will appear in episode 2.20 “Ha’alele (Abandoned)”! :yesss:
    • We now have a title for episode 2.21 (the Five-0 half of the crossover event) and that’s “Pa Make Loa (Touch Of Death)”. It airs April 30 (the first Monday of May sweeps), which means that we can expect the NCIS: Los Angeles episode (presumably 3.21) that makes up the second half of the crossover to be broadcast on May 1.
    • Currently in Hawaii to start shooting 2.21 this week is British actor Craig Robert Young; he has guest starred on two episodes of NCIS: LA (2.24 and 3.01) as Dracul Comescu, member of a Romanian crime family, and it appears he’ll get to reprise his role. You can follow him on Twitter — Craig has promised to tweet photos when he reaches 1,000 followers! And if you have any questions for him about his part, take a look at Craig Robert Young Online.
    • With 2.21 airing on April 30 and the finale (2.23) airing on May 14 (see the next bullet point), that leaves 2.22 to be broadcast on May 7.
    • The script for the Season 2 finale is finished; Peter Lenkov tweeted:

Turned the finale into the studio yesterday. Now on to season 3!

The finale airs on May 14 and the spoiler CBS teased us with is rather ominous:

Five-0 goes on a manhunt when one of their own is killed in the line of duty.

The fan response led Peter to tweet these reassuring words:

Relax… just fasten your seatbelts, it’s gonna be a fun ride.

Let the speculation begin! Don’t you just love all the   :drama:

Note to Alex fans: please don’t be anxious about whether he returns! Peter has confirmed that he is coming back… and think about it, how could he not? After all, this is McGarrett we’re talking about. To borrow a quote from Chin, “My money’s on the SEAL”!

Note that this is the same person who erroneously reported that James Caan was in Hawaii to shoot an episode of Five-0 last year, so please keep in mind that this is not official information. The production will be filming prepping episode 2.22 in the first week of April, with Larry Teng directing.
