State Legislature Honors Hawaii Five-0 and CBS for Their Success

The global appeal of the stylish and contemporary Hawaii Five-0 reboot has not only put the beautiful Pacific islands back on the tourism map, but is also contributing significantly to the growth of the local film and TV industry.

All the more reason for the Hawaii State Legislature to honor CBS and Hawaii Five-0 for their success at noon tomorrow, March 31, in the House Chamber at the State Capitol! Show honorees expected at the ceremony are Alex O’Loughlin, Daniel Dae Kim, Peter Lenkov, Paul Zbyszewski, and Brad Turner. Representing the network will be Glenn Geller (SVP of Current Programming).

State Representative K. Mark Takai has high praise indeed for CBS’s latest triumph:

“In the words of the late James MacArthur, I, too, am heartened to see the legacy of this popular cultural icon, preserved and perpetuated in the hands of the terrific people now at the helm.”

Congratulations to everyone involved for all your hard work in bringing us an hour of much needed sunshine every week – the honor is well-deserved! And Alex – we’re so very proud of you!

Hawaii Five-0 Articles
  • If you’re not already watching Hawaii Five-0 in HD, you might want to after reading this On the Box article:
  • Okay, so I knew that high-definition was pretty impressive even before Hawaii Five-0 hit our screens. But the action-cop show, starring Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan, hammered home how impressive the jump from standard to high-definition is.

To take a closer look at the difference between standard and high-definition during last night’s episode, I hooked my MySky up to an AV channel, as well as an HDMI channel, and switched between the two during particularly attractive shots of the Hawaiian cityscape, the amazing shoreline (including the USS Missouri), and the gorgeous Grace Park.

The difference was remarkable: in standard definition the buildings appeared to be made of flat white walls, the shoreline was just an expanse of dull blue water next to a grey beach, and Grace Park’s face appeared to be sickly and drained of colour. Over on the HDMI channel the buildings were full of intricate detail like balconies and windows, the shoreline came to life and the USS Missouri was incredibly detailed, and Grace Park’s skin colour was healthy and vibrant. Also, she was hot. Well, hotter.

  • The lovely Claire van der Boom makes her first appearance as Rachel on Aussie TV tonight and in an AAP interview, she reveals that she did not have to audition for the part:

“The producer and Scott Caan who plays Danno saw The Pacific, they liked what I did in that and I was offered the role, which is a first for me,” she says.

“To be honest I was a little bit chuffed about that … I don’t know whether it will happen again but it’s nice to know that work is adding up and can help along the way.”

And unlike their on-screen relationship, van der Boom says she andCaan, who she describes as “fantastic” and “really naughty”, have become good friends.

The interview also appeared in part in the Townsville Bulletin.

  • Breakout Kings’s Serinda Swan plays one of the swimsuit models that Rick Springfield’s character Renny photographs on the beach in 1.21 Ho’ohuli Na’au:

If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
Well, since I’m sitting on the beach in Hawaii right now, in between shooting scenes for “Hawaii 5-0″ (I’m currently doing a guest spot on the show) I’d have to say right here isn’t too bad.

You can check out BTS images from the shoot on March 20 here.

  • More on Larisa Oleynik’s guest starring role on Five-0 from TV Guide:

In contrast, Oleynik’s real-life introduction to O’Loughlin and the rest of the cast (Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park) was anything but antagonistic. “I have to say that everyone was so immediately welcoming,” she says. “The first day that I was there, they drove me out to set so I could meet Alex and Scott for the first time. We were able to just sit and have a chat. Right off the bat they made me feel immediately comfortable. Then the next day I got to meet Daniel and Grace.

“All of my scenes have been with Alex so far. He’s a very easy guy to get along with and super supportive and friendly. I’ve been kind of looking to him a little bit to see how he feels the scenes are going.”

  • In the April issue of HD Video Pro, director Len Wiseman and DP Gabriel Beristain discuss how they helped give the Five-0 pilot that feature film look:

For TV virgin Wiseman, the biggest challenge was the accelerated TV schedule. “I wanted to present it like a mini-movie,” he says, “and having never done a series before, it took a while to adjust. Luckily, in Gabriel, I had a great DP for the job.”

Beristain was brought on by Kurtzman and Orci. “They called me and asked me to meet with Len about the show, and I was intrigued even though I hadn’t really done any TV work,” recalls Beristain. “And they told me how they wanted this to have a very strong feature-film look, and that really got my attention. Ironically, all TV is now shot digitally, and neither Len nor I had shot a full HD project in the past, although I’d kept up on all the advances. So I told him, ‘Let’s take advantage of the situation.’”

That’s all for now – I wish you all a great week!
