AOLR Weekly Wrap-Up #46

Hawaii Five-0 updates:

  • The New York Post published a great article on remaking old TV series with input from various program executives:
  • “The challenge is greater when you reboot a show,” says David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios. “It better be pretty good, because you are putting it up against something that was great.

“What you don’t want is: ‘It’s good, but it’s not as good as the original.’ ”

“People’s preconceived notion is not to like it just because it’s a remake,” says Sherman [the CW's executive vice president of drama development]. ” ‘We’ve seen it already, we loved the first one. How are we ever going to love the second one?’

“We have to fight that a lot.”

    About Hawaii Five-0:

Unlike [Stapf's] previous series “90210″ and “Melrose,” which he admits relied too much on nostalgia, he’s treating “Hawaii Five-O” as if “we’re doing a show that no one’s ever heard of . . . our mantra going into this is that it’s a show that can completely stand alone.”

  • Some new talent has been recruited to join the Hawaii Five-0 extended team:
    • Deadline Hollywood reports that Brad Turner is now on board as co-executive producer/director; he joins the production from 24, where he was producer-director for the last four seasons.
    • Wayne Harada writes that Erika Kauffman has been hired as unit publicist for the series. According to the Star Advertiser (the recently merged Honolulu Star Bulletin and Honolulu Advertiser), this is a big deal as having a local unit publicist is akin to “having a pass to the board room.”
    • Rick – a.k.a. Magnum P.I. Set Decorator – who worked on the pilot in March, is happy to report that he starts work as the H50 set decorator this coming week! Rick writes:

“You will, however, learn more about Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams in the pilot than you learned in the 12 years of the original 5-0 and some of the best dialogue I’ve ever read in a television script. Of course the sets will be so wonderful, you may not notice what the actors are saying! (guess I’d better say lol in case anyone else reads this)”

  • For some pilot spoilers (nothing drastic and most of it you’ll probably already know), check out Dontkillspike’s LJ.
  • The Hollywood Reporter published an article about the shows expected to make an appearance at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con:

In the case of “Five-0,” there’s a few factors that make the show more Comic-Con friendly than one might expect. It’s remake of the 1970s series, plus CBS’ tentpole new title for the fall and boasts heavy amounts of action. But what best lures Comic-Con fans to a new show is the panelists, and “Five-0” has former “Battlestar” vet Grace Park and ex-”Lost” co-star Daniel Dae Kim, as well as “Star Trek” producers Alex Kutrzman and Roberto Orci.

Although Grace Park’s and Daniel Dae Kim’s names have come up as Comic-Con attendees in one or two blogs, nothing official has been published yet. As the con is still a little under six weeks away, anything can happen between now and then to the lineup.

  • Hawaii’s MidWeek Magazine is featuring Daniel Dae Kim as their cover story. Alex will undoubtedly be in good company as Daniel sounds like a great guy! DDK shares some of his expectations of H50:

“I think one of the nicest things about Hawaii Five-0 is that we’ll be able to showcase Hawaii. As much as LOST did for the Islands, the one thing it wasn’t able to do was show off the people and the culture. I’m sure the producers of Five-0 are looking forward to that opportunity. I know I certainly am.”

“My character is going to be riding a motorcycle. I’ve ridden casually and I’ve ridden dirt bikes when I was younger, so I had some experience, but this is the first time I’ve ever been licensed.”

“I know how much this project (Hawaii Five-0) means to the people of Hawaii, and I will do what I can to be mindful of that. Whether it means hiring as many local actors and crew as we can, or just making sure the people and culture are represented with respect, taking care of Hawaii will definitely be a priority for me.

“If our show is done right, Hawaii will be a big reason for its success.”

You can follow Daniel on Twitter. He can also be found on Facebook and has an official website.

  • I never thought I’d write this, but here’s a cute post on Deadline Hollywood: Like Father, Like Son – is this the Next Generation Television Stars?
  • From an update from Taryn Manning on her blog:

“As for Hawaii 5-0, I was privileged enough to view the hush-hush pilot and can promise you it is breathtakingly beautiful. I’ll be on your screens in the second episode so get ready :) Working with the cast, especially Scott Caan and Alex O’Loughlin, was wonderful as they are all brilliant actors. I should be leaving on a jet plane for paradise in the near future and am excited for the times to come.”

The latest on The Back-up Plan:

  • The Back-up Plan will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on September 20th and is now available for pre-order at Amazon UK!
  • No release date has been published yet for the US, but Amazon is now accepting pre-orders for both the DVD and the Blu-ray.
  • Philadelphia Inquirer film critic Carrie Rickey published an entertaining post titled Abs-urd about how “chiseled, manscaped and moisturized abs have become the male counterpart of an actress’s topless scene” in movies:

I thought the trend had crested in 2009. Last year’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine was effectively an abs showdown between Hugh Jackman  and Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds’ abs nearly eclipsed his performance in last year’s The Proposal. Then came Taylor Lautner and his 10-pack in Twilight: New Moon. But 2010 looks to be similarly abs-urd. Wahlberg’s shirtlessness is a running gag in Date Night. This week Alex O’Loughlin and his abs upstage J-Lo and her assets in The Back-Up Plan. While watching O’Loughlin, I couldn’t help but notice that he has hair above his pecs and is shaven below, all the better to see the abdominal definition. Made me nostalgic for the chest hair on Burt Reynolds and Alec Baldwin.

  • A box office update: according to Box Office Mojo, the movie has grossed $56.6M worldwide so far. Unless I’m mistaken, The Back-up Plan still has to open in: Colombia, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Ecuador, Romania, Belgium, Chile, Denmark, Peru, Portugal, Bulgaria, Central America, Finland, Norway, Taiwan, Malaysia, Sweden, Thailand, Brazil and lastly, on July 29th in New Zealand.

Other updates:

  • It appears that although Sabine Atkins did get to meet Alex on Friday night at the Donate Life Hollywood VIP reception/cocktail party, there was no time for their interview as Alex’s car service was unable to pick him up in time. I’m sure he must have hated to have arrived late and disappoint Sabine, but from all the reports so far, she is nevertheless absolutely thrilled to have met him! Sabine will be posting more about the event on her organ donation blog soon, but meanwhile, check out the other snippets (and pictures) on Facebook!
  • Tierney Bricker, who writes for E!, was also present at the Donate Life Hollywood event on Friday and did get to interview Alex, so keep an eye out for it on Kristin Dos Santos’s blog!
  • If you still can’t get enough of Alex (and what sane woman with a  can?), here’s a collection of Alex soundbites posted by Entertonement.
  • A couple of polls – they don’t always need to have a higher purpose to be fun:
  • You’ll be seeing some changes to the website in the course of the coming week! It’s being moved to a more stable framework and you can expect to see layout modifications and cosmetic tweaks. All the better to showcase our favorite Aussie with! :heart2:
  • Posted by Deb on YouTube: Three Rivers promo for Every Breath You Take – next Saturday’s episode!
  • There’s a recently posted TV Guide Mega Buzz video on YouTube with “scoop” on Alex. The information is a little dated, but you can just enjoy the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Doc Andy, Lt.Cmdr. Steve and Mick St. John in one segment! (There’s also a Hulu version of this video doing the rounds that is not viewable by international fans – this YouTube version is!)

Gallery updates:

  • HQs from the Donate Life Hollywood Film Festival reception are now available!
  • I’ve replaced all the MQs in the 2007 Summer TCA press tour album, added some more images and as the pics were big enough, I’ve also done some crops of Alex.
  • The MQs of the September 2004 photos taken of Alex at the Toronto International Film Festival have also been replaced with HQs. The resolution was such that I was able to make a couple of nice crops of a very hairy Alex!
  • Also added is an album with five beautiful HQs from Alex’s January rooftop photoshoot in Sydney – much, much better than just scans from the articles!

Have a great week, everyone!

AOLR Weekly Wrap-Up #44

This will hardly come as a surprise, but there are lots of Hawaii Five-0 updates to share  :

  • Matt Roush went through the networks’ fall lineups for Access Hollywood. “Hawaii Five-0 stands out because it’s a brand name, a classic iconic series.” View the clip on YouTubewith thanks to Deb!
  • DVR Divas also invited Matt Roush to discuss the new shows with them. You can view the video or listen to the audio; they reach H50 at 13:37. I’ve also added a transcript:

“[Mike and Molly] is going to be hammocked in between Two and a Half Men and Hawaii Five 0 which is a slam dunk I suppose. Clips for that look explosive, they’ve poured a huge amount of money into that Hawaii Five-0, it’s sexy as hell and it isn’t just Alex O’Loughlin carrying the show, ’cause I don’t think he can carry a show by himself. You’ve got DDK, you’ve got Grace Park, you’ve got Scott Caan who stole those clips, and they all have charisma and I think they’re going to lift him as well and with Hawaii, the exotic locale and everybody looking wonderful, explosions… it almost has a more of an A-Team feel than the old Hawaii Five-0 feel. I think CBS has a definite hit in that one.”

  • EW PopWatch is casting doubt on CBS Marketing president George Schweitzer’s claim that the Hawaii Five-0 theme song “is the most enduring theme in the history of television.” Popwatch refers to a recent article in Variety about the importance of signature tunes for remakes:
  • “We’re going to treat it as a lead character of the show,” [Schweitzer] added, including a full main-title sequence (in an era when there are few left) featuring a new recording of the theme that is “as close to the iconic, classic version as possible.”

Schweitzer believes the “Five-O” theme is not just about nostalgia but appeals to younger converts — as evidenced by the millions of hits on YouTube for multiple versions, including Brian Setzer’s live performance in Japan and various amateur renditions.

For “Five-O,” Schweitzer said CBS’ radio network will be drafted into service, playing various versions and possibly even “marathons” of “Five-O” music, which has been recorded by many artists, including Henry Mancini and a bizarre rendition by Sammy Davis Jr.

“We will do many things to market the show just based on the music alone,” Schweitzer said, citing online competitions, mashups and social media. “It’s part of the culture, so we want to make that culture work for modern media.”

  • From an upfront report at RBR.com:

The clear audience favorite was the trailer from series remake, Hawaii Five-O which had some exciting action sequences. Tassler remarked, “This is not your father’s Hawaii Five O.”   Unfortunately, many of the attendees weren’t old enough to remember their father’s version of the series. Attendees were happy to learn that Daniel Dae Kim, one of the stars of ABC’s recently departed Lost, was cast in the role of Detective Chin Ho Kelly. The audience also enjoyed listening to the famous theme music. In fact, the theme music will be heavily promoted throughout the summer in advance of the series premiere.

  • Here’s a third promo posted by Deb that aired on CBS for the show – it’s only 8 seconds long, so don’t blink  !
  • Brandy McDonnell at The Oklahoman posted another article on her blog about Alex, this time in relation to Hawaii Five-0. Upon being asked about taking on the role of Steve McGarrett, Alex responds:

“Yeah, that was a big decision for me and, I mean, it was ultimately and evidently … an offer I couldn’t turn down. And I’m really glad I took it up. So yeah, you become more realistic about what it means to sign that seven-year contract and become a little more discerning. But I feel like I’ve made the right decision.”

  • According to Tim Ryan, the series will begin filming on July 15th on Oahu. It sounds like finding studio space may be a challenge for the production as ABC is still renting the Hawaii Film Studios despite the fact that Lost has long since wrapped. Tim also writes that CBS is planning a Sunset on the Beach event for the Hawaii Five-0 premiere!
  • Someone had to go and do a study of the number of tweets on Twitter for the new fall shows! I haven’t done a comparison, but am just enjoying the fact that the official CBS uploads of the Hawaii Five-0 Fall Preview video on YouTube has logged over 42,000 views. The opening credits video posted by The Collider is now at over 73,000 views. The show’s popularity has risen by 231% on IMDb.
  • From a cute article posted at NBC’s PopcornBiz:

But the biggest change: Detective Steve McGarrett is going to have some emotional issues, darnit!

It is 2010 after all. Men are allowed to have these things.

The character, classically played by Jack Lord, has been given to Alex O’Loughlin and he will have his own way of dealing with some Oprah-esque issues — like a tattered relationship with his sister played by Taryn Manning.

“My character was written in humanize (McGarrett),” Manning tells PopcornBiz. “I play his younger sister and she’s kind of upset at the world and wants to get closer to her brother.”

Scarily, we are talking about emotional closeness. On a cop show.

  • According to the Futon Critic, however, Mary Ann McGarrett didn’t make the final cut of the pilot episode (although she could of course still be appearing in a later episode). The Futon Critic posted a first-look review in which they try hard to find fault with the pilot, but can’t quite seem to succeed!
  • For another interview with Taryn Manning, check out this video on YouTube.

The Back-up Plan updates:

  • A “new” interview with Alex and Jennifer at the press junket by ViewCave.
  • From a lovely review by the Express Advocate in Oz:

The chemistry with Australian actor, Alex O’Loughlin (The Oyster Farmer), is palpable, with scenes that many will relate to.

The women in the audience at the screening seemed to agree, regularly gasping in delight.

    :giggle:

What surprised me the most was the range of emotions The Back-up Plan covered, and all with plenty of verve.

If you are looking for a romantic escapade into the world of pregnancy dilemmas, this is your movie.

  • Another review worth a read posted by The Reel Reviewer:

The following predictability is the one I depend on with every ticket I buy for a romantic comedy … the ever necessary good-looking guy. His smile lights up the screen and you can grate cheese on his abs, which are displayed often. And no complaints here. However, this sort of newcomer, Alex O’Loughlin, really carried the role well. He proved to have good comic timing and likable expressions that gave me the ability to read him easily and consistently.

The Reel Reviewer considers “The Back-Up Plan” a good plan A for a predictable romantic comedy.

Three Rivers updates:

  • Daemon’s TV have posted some stills from episode 10, Every Breath You Take of Alex as Andy Yablonski.
  • If you don’t mind a major spoiler, check out the closing scene of episode 9 A Roll of the Dice on YouTube – with thanks to Labormieze!
  • I was hoping we would have some clarification by now about the Win-Loss episode CBS is airing on June 5th. I hear it’s supposed to be the unaired pilot (the title certainly sounds familiar), but it’s puzzling because the entertainment release issued by CBS is clearly that of the first episode, i.e. Place of Life. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens!

Other items:

  • Check out the CW’s promo for Moonlight on YouTube! The show premieres this Thursday at 9/8c.
  • The SyFy channel is doing another Moonlight marathon on Thursday as well, showing all 16 episodes, starting at 8 AM and finishing at 4 AM on Friday.
  • Sabine Atkins has been invited to attend the Donate Life Hollywood Film Festival including the cocktail party on June 11th. Of course all Donate Life Hollywood Person of the Year nominees have been invited as well, including Alex O’Loughlin. There is no guarantee that he will be present; however, if he does attend, Sabine may get the opportunity to interview him briefly. To this purpose, she is inviting fans to submit questions for Alex, preferably pertaining to his work as an ambassador for Donate Life. You are welcome to email your questions to questions@alexoloughlinfansfordonatelife.com no later than June 9th. Thanks, Sabine – we’ll keep our fingers crossed for you!

Gallery updates:

  • If everything in the print publications album appears to have been updated, that’s because I had to set it up again after accidentally deleting it.  Worth checking out are the hi-res scans from the Aussie OK! and another version of the Joanne Hawkins interview with Alex, this time in The Sunday Mail (Brisbane).
  • I’ve also added 27 more HQs of Alex at the LA premiere, an album with pictures from the premiere after party and HQs of Alex and Jason Dohring at the New York Comic Con in April 2008.

That’s all for now – I hope you have a great week!

Alex O’Loughlin: “I’ve always had a naughty streak”

Aussie magazine Who published an online interview with Alex O’Loughlin as well as a review of The Back-up Plan in their May 21st issue. Some of Alex’s interview responses follow below (yes, his charisma made him do it… :giggle: ).

An insert from the magazine is also included, with a few more questions put to Alex - with thanks to Ozbella for the scan!

Where does your charisma come from?
I think I was born with it. And, you know what? It’s got me into a lot of trouble over the years. I’ve always had a bit of a naughty streak. I got in trouble at school for disrupting the class.

How do you feel when you see yourself on screen?
I hate it, man. I sit there for an hour-and-a-half in a ball with my legs crossed and my arms crossed and a hand over half of my face, just sort of staring through my fingers. And when the credits roll at the end I realise that I’ve been sitting in that position the whole time and I’m sort of sweating.

Why do you find it so hard?
I feel like I still am learning. I watched The Back-up Plan last night and I tell myself, “Okay, next time, I’ll do that differently.” I look forward to a point in my career where I’m like, “I know what I’m doing and I don’t need to see any of it.”

AOLR Weekly Wrap-Up #43

Sorry folks, this one is going to be rather lengthy…

Hawaii Five-O updates:

  • The New York Times reports that CBS will be promoting the new Hawaii Five-0 this summer using the infamous theme song:

“People of all ages from around the world identify with the theme,” said George F. Schweitzer, chief marketing officer for the CBS Corporation, citing numerous performance videos that can be watched on YouTube. So the music is being treated “like another main character in the series,” he added.

The theme, written by Morton Stevens and popularized by the Ventures, will be heard “in many different ways all summer long to get people aware of the new show,” Mr. Schweitzer said, on TV and radio, online and at live events. WCBS-FM in New York, which has an oldies format, played the Ventures’ recording several times this week.

  • HawaiiNewsNow has two Hawaii Five-0 items in article and video formats:
  • The Hollywood Reporter has this to say about Hawaii Five-O’s Monday time slot:

Mondays at 10 p.m.: ABC’s “Castle” vs. NBC’s “Chase” vs. CBS’ “Hawaii Five-O”

If ABC and NBC thought they had it tough airing against “CSI: Miami,” they better get ready because a big wave is coming at them. “Hawaii Five-O” is perfectly on brand for CBS and the Oahu setting gets the network out of the grim atmospherics of some of its other procedurals. Sure, “Five-O” could crash, but on paper this a strong replacement for “Miami” in this slot — even with having a presumably weaker lead-in from a new comedy (“Mike & Molly”) than “Miami” enjoyed from “Big Bang Theory.”

More on prime-time time period battles next fall at THR.

  • A snippet from the Jacksonville Observer:

FREQUENT FLIER: CBS has confirmed its pickup of the “Hawaii Five-0″ reboot starring Alex O’Loughlin as Steve McGarrett and Scott Caan as “Danno” Danny Williams — but that doesn’t mean O’Loughlin expects to spend all his time on the islands. “I’ll come back on weekends,” the hunky Australian actor tells us. “I don’t think I’ll be able to stay all the time.” He adds, “I spend more money on traveling than anything else. I feel like I’m always away from my family. I’m either flying around the world to see them or I’m flying the people I love to me. Sometimes I wish I had become a banker or a builder, to keep me in one spot.”

  • Check out this nice post on the Hawaii Blog about the upcoming show; read the comments below the article too.
  • There is some ado about a 2011 Ford Mustang GT possibly getting a role in the show, according to a blog post in USA Today’s Driveon community.
  • Kristin Dos Santos spoke with Daniel Dae Kim at the upfront event about Hawaii Five-o. I especially like what he has to say about Alex and his noisy fans:

Alex is fantastic. I hadn’t met him before. I heard a lot about him. But he’s a pro, he’s dead-on. He works really hard; he set a really great tone for the rest of the cast and crew. He’s very familiar with the cult following. It’s been interesting to watch the Internet chatter because he has a very vocal fan base. They’re all chiming in on Five-O.

Check out the full article at E! Online

  • You can view Kristin’s chat with Alex, Daniel, Scott and Grace on video at E! Online too. What’s not on there is also very interesting and included in the article beneath the video:

Alex is fully aware and overly grateful for CBS’s obsession with him—but going through the ups and downs of a series after series isn’t always fun for the star. “I feel like I need a Class of ’10 sweatshirt to document this,” he told me at Upfronts Wednesday. “I don’t know how many times I’m going to have to do it, but [Hawaii Five-O] feels pretty great.”

And that love affair I speak of is of the mutual variety. “I talked to Nina Tassler before I was locked into the show and said, ‘Listen, I don’t know what this beast within you is that loves me so much, and I don’t know what you feed it or where you keep it, but I really love you for it.” Added Nina: “Fans don’t get tired of their favorite stars, and they love him. He has an extraordinary fan base. We love him.”

An extraordinary guy deserves nothing less than an extraordinary fan base and hopefully Hawaii Five-O will add a new dimension to that!

  • Hawaii Five-O is now on Facebook and of course, the official CBS Hawaii Five-O page is also live!
  • Some 1,250 foreign TV program buyers will be flocking to LA for the annual LA Screenings starting tomorrow, where they can check out the new season’s offerings from the five US networks, consisting of 37 new series (including 22 dramas). Hopefully there will be a lot of interest in Hawaii Five-O, so that more international fans get to enjoy the show locally. According to The Australian,

Among the series already grabbing attention are the remake of Hawaii Five-O on CBS, starring Australian Alex O’Loughlin, the CW network’s action drama Nikita, starring Asian star Maggie Q, the latest series from J.J. Abrams, Undercovers, and sitcom Outsourced.

Other items:

  • While checking out the website of the Australian movie magazine Filmink, I came across a post about their 2006 Movie Extra Awards and discovered that Alex was nominated as Best Australian Newcomer for Oyster Farmer. I’m sorry to say that he didn’t win, but hopefully there will be lots of meaningful awards in his future. Some of the categories for the Filmink awards are quite intriguing by the way; Aussies certainly have a sense of humor!
  • The Sun-Herald in Sydney gave The Back-up Plan a 7/10 rating in a review today:

[Jennifer Lopez] looks great, her comedic timing is spot on and she has a nice chemistry with Aussie hunk Alex O’Loughlin (Oyster Farmer), who is an ideal match for his talented co-star.

Ideal for a girls’ night out, this enjoyable frolic is upbeat and funny with an edgy undertone that gives it ballast.

I haven’t found the article online, but of course there’s an alternative for that in the gallery:wink:

  • The Back-up Plan has grossed $57.4 million worldwide so far ($21.5 M overseas according to The Hollywood Reporter and $35.9 M domestically according to Box Office Mojo estimates). And we still have quite a number of countries to go…
  • Alex will be getting some additional attention this summer! Not only will CW air repeats of Moonlight starting Thursday, June 3rd at 9 PM, but CBS is also bringing back Three Rivers on Saturdays. From June 5th through July 3rd, the unaired 5 episodes will be broadcast at 8 PM. Currently CBS has the episode “Win-Loss” listed in their schedule for June 5th. Thanks to the ladies at Hawaii Five-0 Fans for this information!
  • Alex is featured in the May issue of the Italian Vanity Fair! Alex O’Loughlin Italia has scans of the article and Vanity Fair has some additional pictures in a slideshow. Thanks to Kalua and BabyJenks!

Gallery updates, in case you haven’t browsed there recently:
