Wednesday night’s episode of Criminal Minds brought ex-vampire heartthrob Alex O’Loughlin back to series TV in an unforgettable character. Usually, the Criminal Minds format focuses on the profilers, their methods and the victims. But Wednesday’s episode took a different turn.
Viewers were allowed to delve deeper into the everyday life of the serial killer, and not just the gore of his crimes. While he has no more than a couple lines of actual dialogue in the first 15 minutes, O’Loughlin dominated the scenes with his quirky actions and subtle expressions. For those of you who thought the Aussie actor was just eye-candy, this role gave everyone something to talk about.
O’Loughlin was almost-unrecognizable in his portrayal of Vincent – an obsessive compulsive serial killer who had been deeply scarred after witnessing the murder of his mother. Whether it was the skill of the show’s writing staff or the actor’s deft touch with the material, viewers learned how such a “monster” could be created out of an emotionally broken child. And how he was capable of feeling guilt, despite an inability to control his compulsive and murderous behaviour.

With each performance, Alex grows more into a superstar among superstars. His portrayal of Vincent was poignant, touching and so emotional that one feels sorrow for this criminal despite of his transgressions.
