Vote for Donate Life’s Rose Parade Float on New Year’s Day!

Photo: Donate Life

At 8:00 a.m. Pacific time on January 1, 2010 the 121st Tournament of Roses Parade kicks off in Pasadena, California! Donate Life will participate for the seventh time in the parade with a float to honor the generous donors and families who have changed lives with their gifts of organ donation.

The theme of the float is New Life Rises, beautifully symbolized by a 30-foot tall phoenix that soars above the 24 float riders, all individuals whose lives have been touched by organ donation.

The mythical firebird represents rebirth: the donors who give life in their death and the recipients whose lives are renewed by their gifts. The phoenix’s tail feathers are decorated with floragraphs of 76 organ donors and each portrait has been lovingly decorated by their relatives.

Donors across the US are also memorialized in the Family Circle Garden that leads the float and features 2000 roses dedicated to them. Each rose carries an individual and personal message, including those from Three Rivers’ Alex O’Loughlin and Carol Barbee. Alex is, of course, also a Donate Life ambassador.

The Tournament of Roses organization will award a Viewers’ Choice Trophy to the float that gets the most votes in an online poll on KTLA.com. A total of 41 float entries make up the Rose Parade. Please help bring the 2010 trophy to Donate Life by casting your vote for New Life Rises in recognition of the amazing team effort that went into creating the float. You can submit your vote between 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. PST on January 1st.

The Rose Parade will be covered live by KTLA 5, starting at 6 a.m. and you will also be able to view the video on KTLA.com and the images of the floats.

Thank you and Happy New Year!

Alex O’Loughlin Dedicates Donate Life Float Family Circle Rose

donate life banner 4Alex O’Loughlin has dedicated a Donate Life float Family Circle Rose in memory of Fernando Fernandez Alejandre. Inspired by Three Rivers, Fernando’s family consented to his eye donation.

Alex’s personal dedication will be placed in the 2010 Donate Life float’s Family Circle Garden and reads:

In memory of Fernando Fernandez Alejandre. Fernando’s legacy lives on through his family, friends and those whose sight he restored through cornea donation. I will always be inspired by Fernando’s generosity. Very sincerely, Alex O’Loughlin

From DonateLifeFloat.org:

The Donate Life Family Circle Rose Dedication Program offers donor families, transplant recipients and candidates, hospitals, transplant centers and organizations nationwide the opportunity to dedicate roses placed on the Donate Life float in the Rose Parade, which is watched by tens of millions of people in the U.S. and worldwide on New Year’s Day. Each dedicated rose is placed in a vial that carries a unique, personal message of love, hope and remembrance, and honors donors, recipients and others touched by organ and tissue donation. These dedicated roses create a living memorial and live in a featured design element on the Donate Life float each year, the Family Circle Garden.

Many thanks to Sabine Atkins and Silke Roehl for the heads up.

Alex O’Loughlin Expected at Summit for Life in Aspen

dla-06

Update 12-Dec-09: The executive director of the Chris Klug foundation has received confirmation from Donate Life Hollywood’s campaign director, Tenaya Wallace, that Alex O’Loughlin is unable to attend the event in Aspen due to other obligations today. Thanks to Sabine Atkins for sharing this information!

Continuing his efforts as an ambassador for Donate Life America, Alex O’Loughlin is expected to attend the 4th annual Summit for Life charity event in Aspen, Colorado this weekend. This was confirmed by Glenn Matsuki of OneLegacy today.

The objective of Aspen Summit for Life is to promote awareness for organ and tissue donation and the event comprises various activities taking place 10-12 December. The athletic signature event is a nighttime snowshoe race on December 12th up 3,267 vertical feet to the top of Aspen Mountain for participants of all ages and physical abilities. It is possible to show your support by sponsoring a racer, although Alex himself isn’t listed as one Forum Smileys. Don’t be surprised however, if he does participate in the climb!

Other activities this year include Celebrating Life: Inspiration and Personal Summits, a panel discussion followed by a reception on December 10th. The weekend events kick off with Wine and Dine for Life (a dinner benefiting the Chris Klug Foundation) and Party for Life, both taking place on December 11th at Pacifica Seafood and Raw Bar.

For more information, visit Glenn’s Donate Life – Organ & Tissue Donation blog and of course the Aspen Summit for Life website.
