Whiteout: Observations from Press Screening

whiteout_090909_01While the thriller Whiteout had its US premiere the evening of September 9th at Mann’s Village Theatre in Westwood with the cast in attendance, including Alex O’Loughlin, a press screening took place simultaneously in Hollywood.

Although the first reviews published are not favorable, Alex O’Loughlin fans can certainly be proud of his performance.

Despite a promising plot, Whiteout‘s comic book origin is unfortunately apparent in the clumsy dialogue in some scenes, which regrettably provoked unintentional laughter from the audience during key dramatic moments.

None involve Russell Haden, the role portrayed by Alex.

Although the acting often disappointed, Alex is a clear exception. He proves once again that he seemingly slips effortlessly into the skin of his character; Russell Haden is a believable pesky pilot whose rowdy antics are amusing even when he is being a nuisance.

Alex also has little trouble in showing a darker side to Russell that makes him a credible “baddie”.

Producer David Gambino calls Alex “a real find, such a natural, charismatic actor.”

Information for fans:

  • Alex’s role calls for an Aussie accent;
  • Russell Haden and his pals perform a naked sprint in Alex’s first scene; according to the dialogue he is “the second out the door”;
  • The interrogation scene that was viewable prior to the release of the movie was edited; it is not only longer but also contains stronger language;
  • Some scenes are not suitable for the squeamish;
  • Alex has more screen time than you may expect.

Alex quotes about the movie:

[Russell] is a pretty audacious personality. He has a lot of energy and confidence, and is a bit of  a smart ass. He does okay with the ladies, although not with Carrie, and rather than be discouraged by that unfortunate fact, he just tries harder and more shamelessly every chance he gets.

The role called for a cheeky Aussie pilot. I thought, “I don’t know how to fly, but I’m a cheeky Aussie”, so I figured I could handle it.

[The faux snow is] starch and salt, so you felt like you’d been rolling around in pizza dough all day.

Whiteout opens in theaters in the US on Friday, September 11th.

Alex O’Loughlin: “I don’t know how to fly, but I’m a cheeky Aussie”

wo-alexThe more we find out about Whiteout‘s Russell Haden, the more intrigued we become. Our patience will soon be rewarded as the movie opens on Friday, September 11th!

Studio Cut published a recent cast interview and Alex O’Loughlin reveals a little more about his Aussie movie character:

Meanwhile, O’Loughlin plays pilot Russell Haden who spends his off-hours drinking and pulling harmless pranks like a frat boy—an understandable tension release after pushing himself and his plane to the limit.  The actor admits, “He’s a pretty audacious personality. He has a lot of energy and confidence, and is a bit of a smartass. He does okay with the ladies, although not with Carrie, and rather than be discouraged by that unfortunate fact, he just tries harder and more shamelessly every chance he gets.”

“Alex was a real find, such a natural, charismatic actor,” says Sena. “A good portion of his dialogue was ad-libbed.” To which O’Loughlin responds, “The role called for a cheeky Aussie pilot. I thought, ‘I don’t know how to fly but I’m a cheeky Aussie,’ so I figured I could handle it.”

We know Alex handles cheekiness with aplomb, and undoubtedly flying would not be a challenge for long should he ever decide to learn how.

Alex O’Loughlin’s Russell Haden has a Hidden Agenda

whiteout_013Moviehole recently posted an interview with Alex O’Loughlin and Gabriel Macht. It’s the first interview, with the exception of the recent video interview, in which Alex gets to talk about working on the action thriller Whiteout! Alex plays Russell Haden and explains who his character is:

Russell is an Australian pilot who’s based in the same base we meet all the characters, where they all live. He does fly-outs. He moves gears, scientific equipment, people, food and supplies. They have a string of pilots working down there. They sort of run their own schedule. As long as they get the work done, it doesn’t really matter. He’s an Aussie lad, he’s a bit of a womanizer, he’s got all these sorts of fronts, that’s his way of portraying himself that is, that keeps everyone at arm’s length, because essentially he has, like all the characters in the show, another agenda. He has an MO. In this very close-knit community, he does his best to keep everybody as far away from his business as he can.

About how he experienced filming in an extremely cold climate, Alex says:

We shot in northern Manitoba on the frozen lakes, which is about three hours north of Winnipeg. And it was cold. It was minus forty, minus fifty. We spent the first couple of weeks there, and then we went to Montréal and we spent a few months in the sound stages and did all the internal stuff we needed to do. The great thing about doing all the exteriors where we did them in the conditions that we did them in, is that, essentially, that’s very close to the conditions where this film is situated and where these people live and have to survive. And it changes how you feel. Your blood pressure drops, you get dizzy, euphoric, and the simplest tasks become difficult. You can’t see the horizon for the edge of the ice, and so you can get disorientated very quickly. So it was very helpful as an actor.
