Summary:
Mick is confronted with an unpleasant ghost from his past when Lee Jay Spalding, a killer Mick helped put away for murdering his own wife, is released on parole. Lee Jay knows Mick’s secret and is after payback.A journalist friend of Beth’s, Julia Stevens, has published a book about the police investigation into Spalding’s case. She alleges that the PI involved at the time contaminated the evidence, which led to Spalding’s wrongful conviction. Beth is intrigued when Julia tells her that the PI was called Mick St. John and even more so when she sees a photo of him in Julia’s book. He looks exactly like the Mick St. John that she knows and she decides to confront him. When Beth shows him the photo in the book, Mick tells her that it’s his father and warns her that Julia is wrong. After showing up at the book’s release party to give Beth the Spalding police case file, he confronts Spalding in the men’s room, but Spalding turns the tables by staking Mick temporarily and wounding himself before telling others that Mick attacked him. Beth is appalled and doesn’t believe him when Mick denies laying a hand on Spalding. When Spalding breaks into his apartment and shoots himself in the arm with Mick’s gun before dialing 911 to say that he was shot by Mick St. John, the PI becomes a fugitive. Mick later turns up at Beth’s apartment when Josh, Deputy DA and Beth’s boyfriend, is there. Beth decides to take a chance and puts her trust in Mick and agrees to help clear his name.
Alex O’Loughlin on this episode:
“I really like number two. The end of the episode made it one of my favorites because Beth finding out so early about Mick was shocking to me. First, as an actor, I thought, ‘Oh God, what are they doing? They’re going to ruin our show.’ But it actually works really well and sort of gets that discovery out of the way, which enables us to get down to brass tacks.”So the show isn’t about, ‘Ohmygod, is she going to find out?’ It’s about the relationship these two people have and the love that’s gradually building between them.”
