Summary:
When Leni Hayes, a witness in protective police custody, escapes the clutches of a killer hired by arms dealer Amir Fayed, Josh asks Mick to locate her and bring her back. After finding her in a remote desert location, Mick discovers that the killer also knows her whereabouts. He and Leni flee in the assassin’s car – a stolen police cruiser – and narrowly escape when it is hit by a missile courtesy of Fayed. Heading deeper into the desert with the witness, under the scorching sun, Mick discovers the answer to the question, “What do you get when you put a vampire in the desert?”

Beth is shocked when she hears that Mick and Leni have perished in what appears to be a car accident and points out to Josh that he has a mole in his department. Meanwhile, Mick and Leni stumble upon a deserted motel and Mick, close to dying after prolonged exposure to sunlight and going for hours without blood, instructs Leni to contact Beth. But can she get there in time to save him, with the hired killer still on the loose?
Alex O’Loughlin on this episode:
“There was a lot of location stuff in that episode. We all went to the desert and shot out there for a few days. No new show has enough money, let alone an hour drama that has special effects, special make-up, is stunt heavy, shoots at night and is based in genre. This show was really shooting against all odds. It can be difficult to make it look good. In this episode, there are a couple of things that I wish we could have changed. Nothing in the performances or storyline, just in effects and things like that. I really like the storyline and the acting. I thought the guest stars were fantastic and overall I felt like I was watching a feature film. It was also an important episode for Josh and Mick. They were starting to get to know each other a bit more and it was important to build that trust between them, despite the fact that feelings were starting to develop btween Mick and Beth.

Memorable Quotes:
Josh:
We think there must have been a couple of shooters.
Mick:
There was only one. Smoke makes a good silent partner.

Beth:
So, how long can you stay outside? Like, how much sun is too much?
Mick:
Any is too much.
Beth:
You’re a delicate flower, Mick St. John.
+++
+++
Omar:
The guard at the gate should have told you. Mr. Fayed isn’t home.
Josh:
Well, if he isn’t, he’s violating the terms of his pariole.
+++
+++
Fayed:
My lawyer is on his way.
Josh:
An MBA from Stanford. I figured you could read a simple warrant.
+++
+++
Mick:
No hospitals. Just keep trying to get a signal. Call the number I gave you. Ask for Beth. Just talk to her. Only Beth.
Leni:
Who is she?
Mick:
I trust her.
Leni:
Hey, is she your girlfriend?
Mick:
No. It’s complicated.

+++
Mick:
[VO] What do you get when you put a vampire in the desert? Maybe no more vampire.
+++
+++
Mick:
[To Beth] I guess I am a delicate flower.
+++
+++
Beth:
I know you won’t kill me and I know you won’t try to turn me either. I’ve got this vampire friend who’s been explaining this stuff.
Mick:
At some point, you’re going to have to stop me.
