Trivia:
  • The pilot was filmed entirely in Oahu. Filming commenced on Friday, March 5 at the U.S.S. Missouri and wrapped on Saturday, March 27, 2010. On March 28, Alex O’Loughlin was back in LA for The Back-up Plan’s press conference.
  • The set was traditionally blessed on the first day of filming.
  • The premiere episode is rumored to have cost $8 million.
  • Enough footage was shot to fill a 2-hour episode.
  • The pilot was director Len Wiseman’s first television project and he also acted as executive producer, together with Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Peter Lenkov.
  • Used to shooting movies, Wiseman intended to use a “television style” for Hawaii Five-0. Realizing he didn’t know what that was, he ended up shooting the way he normally does, only moving “really, really fast. It was the way that I usually shoot, just much more stressed.” The result is a feature-style TV show template that is used for every episode. Source: Collider.
  • CBS issued a media blackout throughout the entire shooting period. Most information during this time reached fans via Twitter and Facebook.
  • The production office was set up in the Kalia Tower at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
  • Approximately 150 military personnel were involved in filming on the USS Missouri and the destroyer USS Chafee and roughly 30 were cast as extras.
  • When filming was done, the USS Missouri tweeted, “Hawaii Five-O wrapping up @USSMissouri today. Very impressed by their professionalism. Here’s hoping for a series.”
  • Real members of the Honolulu Police Department were cast as extras for Steve’s father’s funeral scene at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, a.k.a. Punchbowl National Cemetery. They had to wear fake Hawaii Five-0 patches over their real ones.
  • An apartment at the Tradewinds Student Suites was used as Danny Williams’s place.
  • A set built in the Old Post Office on Miliani Street was used as the task force’s headquarters; it remained in use throughout Season 1. For Season 2, the HQ set was built at the production’s sound stage in the old Honolulu Advertiser building.
  • The surfing scene where the men meet Kono was filmed in Waimea Bay.
  • The military convoy/MRAP scene was shot at Kualoa Ranch, where Jurassic Park was also filmed.
  • The pilot features the 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 as Danny’s car. The black 1974 Mercury Marquis that was Steve McGarrett’s second car from the original show also makes a brief appearance as Steve’s father’s vintage car.
  • The professionals at Saber Ops were consulted as military technical advisers for the action scenes.
  • The picture of little Steve on the desk at John McGarrett’s house is actually a photo of Alex O’Loughlin.
  • A website for Steve McGarrett’s and Chin Ho Kelly’s fictional Kukui High School sprung up overnight after being mentioned in the pilot. KHS is now also present on Facebook and Twitter and the public interest in the school has led to a line of branded merchandise. The kukui nut (“Mr. Nut”) is the school mascot and “Go Nuts!” is what you’ll hear the alumni shout.
  • The initials “LKL” spray painted on the wall inside Fred Doran’s Quonset hut and “L.K.L. Lines” on the container ship is a salute to Len Wiseman and his family. “LKL” stands for “Len, Kate, Lily.”
  • The fight between Steve and Danny after Danny is shot was not in the original script, but an idea of Alex’s who called Peter Lenkov and suggested that “to launch this partnership, they should physically come to blows.”
  • At least thirteen takes of the iconic line, “Book ‘em, Danno” were experimented with in order to find the one that hit the right note.
  • Music tracks: Sinister Kind (The Black Keys), It Ain’t Nothin’ (Cypress Hill feat. Young De), Rise Up (Cypress Hill feat. Tom Morello)

Memorable Quotes:
Steve:
Is this your kid?
Danny:
Yeah, stunning detective work.
+++
+++
Danny:
This guy Doran’s a shooter. We shouldn’t be doing this without backup.
Steve:
You are the backup.
Danny:
I’m the backup. I hate him. I hate him so much.
+++
+++
Steve:
How’s the arm?
Danny:
Let’s just not talk.
Steve:
You mean right now or ever again?
Danny:
Just… both, okay?
+++
+++
Danny:
Rule number one: if you get somebody shot, you apologize.
Steve:
I’m sorry.
Danny:
You don’t wait for a special occasion, like birthdays or frickin’ President’s Day.
Steve:
I’m sorry, okay, I’m sincerely sorry. That’s what I was trying to tell you. Last year. When this conversation first started.
Danny:
Your apology is noted. Acceptance is pending.
Steve:
You let me know now.
+++
+++
Danny:
That’s your cousin?
Chin Ho:
Choose your next words carefully. Both of you.
+++
+++
Danny:
Wait a minute, how do you know the boot prints don’t belong to Hesse?
Steve:
Hesse wears a size 11 like me, except double E. The prints I found were smaller and Hesse gets his footwear custom made. Direct injected polyurethane midsole with a natural rubber outsole.
Danny:
Oh. Your brain must be a miserable place.
+++
+++
Sang Min:
What kind of cops are you?
Steve:
The new kind.
