Three Rivers Hospital Set Revealed

The ultra-modern Three Rivers hospital set housed in the Cary Grant building on the Paramount lot was revealed to the press today as part of the TCA summer tour. The Los Angeles Times covered the set visit in an article.

When the production decided to build a hospital set in Los Angeles, Carol Barbee, the show’s creator, made it her “dream hospital”. Although the many computer monitors give it a high-tech look, the set still has a warm, serene feel about it.

“A lot of it is about making people feel they’re in a nice hotel so they don’t feel intimated,” Barbee said. “So they feel they’re welcomed here, they know the technology is there, they know if they need help someone is there, but they feel calm serene, in comfortable place.”

Production designer Phillip Toolin drew his inspiration for the set from Scandinavian hospitals. “They looked the most humane and looked like people’s houses or like beautiful hotels. That’s what we want. We want our patients to feel like it’s not a hospital-clinic atmosphere,” he explains.
