Hawaii Five-0 Cast to Support Veterans Day Week Initiatives

[Updated 12-Nov-11] According to a Mission Serve press release, the cast of Hawaii Five-0 will join other celebrities across America in honoring military personnel, veterans and their families during Veterans Day week by supporting Mission Serve’s ServiceNation initiative that will help to establish Veterans Day as a day of service and celebration.

The press release specifically names Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim and Masi Oka, but makes no mention of what form their support will take. However, Hawaii News Now reporter Tannya Joaquin posted the following updates on her Facebook account:

It’s not all about APEC. I’ve been sworn to secrecy, but I can give you this tease. I will be hanging out off set with the cast of Hawaii Five-O on Monday. What will they be doing? Stay tuned…

Of course, we have in depth coverage of APEC planned, but we’ll also have a Veterans Day tie-in involving Hawaii Five-O. Details to come.

Tim Ryan mentions in his blog:

On Monday, the Five-0 cast will visit Hickam Air Force Base for an event called “The Teaching Garden”…

And the Associated Press confirms:

The stars of CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0? will be lending a hand off-screen to military school kids at Pearl Harbor.

Actors Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim and Masi Oka will be among the volunteers Monday helping to plant a garden at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

ServiceNation: Mission Serve has partnered with sponsors to organize 11 civilian-military service projects in 11 cities across the United States that will feature prominent guests and receive considerable media attention.

All projects will take place on 11/11/11, with the exception of Honolulu, where two events are scheduled on Monday, November 14 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam:

Installation of a Teaching Garden

In partnership with the American Heart Association and the Bishop Museum, military children and adult volunteers will lay the foundation to encourage a healthier lifestyle and eating habits by installing a Teaching Garden:

The Teaching Garden, founded in 2010 by Kelly Meyer, has already installed dozens of gardens at schools and parks across the country. In Hawaii, a special partnership with the Bishop Museum will enable native Hawaiian flora to become a key focus of the garden. Botanists and cultural practitioners will teach the children about the importance of indigenous plant species and native conservation. Ultimately, the results of this project—a community service effort—will produce fruits and vegetables to be used for school lunch programs, as well as serving as a continuing symbol of the connections between the military community and the local and Hawaiian communities.

“Hiring Our Heroes Hawaii” Job Fair

Together with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and other partners, ServiceNation is hosting the “Hiring Our Heroes Hawaii” job fair at the Hickam Officers’ Club from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The event will also feature celebrities, musicians and civic leaders and will be attended by First Lady Michelle Obama.
