Hawaii Five-0: 2.07 “Ka Iwi Kapu” Recaps & Reviews

I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as much while watching an episode of Hawaii Five-0 as I did this week – in all the appropriate places of course!

Despite the gore of the case at hand (ha!), ”Ka Iwi Kapu (Sacred Bones)” is essentially a feel-good episode and it certainly deserves a Top 3 spot on my list of bests, but it is getting crowded in there. Every time I think they can’t possibly top what’s gone before, Hawaii Five-0 goes and does it again… and with a holiday-themed installment no less, which are normally not all that remarkable.

There are a few moments that defy logic that I can forgive, like Danny taking Grace trick or treating in his run-down hotel and the creepy homeless guy not being questioned at all initially – either as a witness or as a suspect – despite his proximity to the crime scene.

Things that make up for such lapses are the team teasing Lori about her Halloween costume, the return of the full-blown Steve-and-Danny cargument, the cute interaction between the two guys while Lori tells Dr. Asano about using ground penetrating radar (if you missed that, please go back and watch it!), the wonderfully nutty Max and the team helping Danny move into his new apartment (“Me, personally – I don’t mind a bit of blood.” )

And now we know why he ends up sleeping on Steve’s couch soon!

Five-0 Redux:

Overall, I thought this episode brought to light much of what makes Hawaii so special. It’s our culture and beliefs and even our treatment of friends who perhaps don’t share our spiritual nature that sets us apart from other places. This episode was a great showcase of what Peter Lenkov keeps saying is one of the major characters in the show — Hawaii itself.

Five-0 Undercover:

“Silly” – That was the word that my friend described last night’s Hawaii Five-0 episode. He thought it was silly that Danny’s character had the supernatural problem with the heiau and silly that he ran into a ghost. In all fairness, he did say he liked it and was entertained. The difference between me and him was that I was born and raised here and he wasn’t. The episode managed to capture a lot of Hawaiian culture, folklore, and ghost stories that we were told as kids that used to scare the living daylights out of us. That, in addition to Robert Englund’s creepy performance and Joe Dante’s unique directorial eye, left me very happy and impressed with last night’s episode.

PopStar:

Double, double toil and trouble… and trouble is exactly what Danny (Scott Caan) will get for taking out his bad evening on the living and the dead. I have a great affinity for holiday episodes because they usually allow the show to step out of the crime-of-the-week box and let the characters shine. Halloween on Hawaii Five-0 is no different and this episode was a creepily fun romp. Even if I did want to smack Danny a couple of times throughout, he was just being very “Danny-like” after all.

Crave Online:

This week’s big guest star, Robert Englund, hammed it up as a crazed, machete-wielding homeless guy obsessed with protecting the Heiau from the “Blair Witch” wannabes. I appreciate the casting but I still wish “H50″ would have a little bit more fun with its gueststars. Englund’s turn this week was at least a step in the right direction.

Daemon’s TV:

In this episode the team has to handle everything from Freddy Krueger (okay no not really, but how cool was it to see Robert Englund?), grave robbers, kids trespassing on sacred ground, bodies going missing from caskets, hands in duffle bags…oh yeah and a murder. Sounds like your typical Halloween to me. I enjoyed how they managed to put in some creepy/scary moments in with the normal crime and action. Danny’s discovery of the ghost lady at his new apartment was classic.

This is in my top three too Mizz… and that’s hard to choose because there are so many good episodes. But I still giggle every time I watch it and I’ve watched it a bunch!
    Everything about it was special.
I love how they include the cultural aspects along with the humor. This show is about having fun and being entertained. There are dozens of crime shows on and basically they all have the same premise, commit, investigate and solve the crime in 43 minutes or less. Not only do they do that, but we get a little closer and a little more attached to each one of these characters with every episode. They simply have become Ohana, to one another and to all of us. What a wonderful way to spend a Monday night. Aloha! :surfwave:

Thank you Mizz for all the recaps and reviews of episode 207. I also enjoyed this episode, with some subtle humor. It seems like the characters are very comfortable around each other, teasing and laughing together. They Five-0 members are now family.
    :yahoo: :cheerldr: :thankyou:
