Wayne Harada at HonoluluAdvertiser.com expects that the new Hawaii Five-0 will be a boon for Hawaii and its economy, provided the show is handled correctly.
Actor Daniel Dae Kim and the writing/producing team of Orci, Kurtzman and Lenkov are listed among the pros. Alex O’Loughlin, however, is apparently somewhat of an unknown factor to him, as Mr. Harada states that “he has to curb his Down Under accent”, but “he’s kind of a young hunk, which makes him marketable” ;-).
According to the columnist, there are some absolute Dos and Don’ts for Hawaii Five-0 redux:
5 THINGS ‘FIVE-O’ SHOULD DO …
- Keep Morton Stevens’ “Hawaii Five-O” theme song in the opening and closing credits.
- Film entirely in the Islands, taking advantage of the landscape and people.
- Include geographical blunders — like showing McGarrett driving along Kalakaua Avenue and saying he’s heading for the airport, or mixing up mauka and makai. (We adore these blatant miscues; it’s been part of the show’s charm).
- Continue the stable of secondary characters: Danny, Kono, Ben Kokua, the governor.
- Preserve the “Book ‘em, Danno” classic line, from McGarrett to Danny Williams.
… AND 5 THINGS IT SHOULDN’T — EVER
- Cast locals only as heavies.
- Abolish recurring roles like Duke and Truck.
- Relocate the “Five-O” headquarters from ‘Iolani Palace — the only monarchial palace with historical roots in the U.S. — to a modern-day edifice.
- Neglect familiar Island and Mainland actors — it’s comforting to see guest faces we know.
- Throw nonsensical Hawaiian names, like Kalanikanakaolemauka, into the dialogue.

Oh, well, Mr. Harada will have a very pleasant surprise in the new Steve!!! We know that! Alex won’t be an “unknown factor” any more. The do’s and dont’s are probably right.
Claudia
I am looking forward to the new series, the Hawaiian locales, and the flavor of the islands. I hope they do keep the theme song and the “Book ‘em, Danno” classic line. I confess, being Canadian, I wouldn’t recognize geographical blunders or non-sensical names. I hope that Alex and the rest of the cast and the crew have a wonderful time creating this new show and making it their own Mizz!
Thank you MizzoH for this interesting article. I completely agree with all the do’s and don’t's formulas of how to create a well loved and successful hit crime drama series for the new Hawaii Five-O. We know one thing that this new show has done right is to cast the very gifted Alex O’Loughlin to portray the charismatic, tough, intelligent, heroic and brave Detective Steve McGarrett.
