CBS Takes “Three Rivers” Off the Air

IMG_0268Various reports have been posted that CBS has taken Three Rivers off the air with immediate effect. It would appear that the decision was made just today by the network, as the extended promo for next Sunday’s episode was posted on CBS.com quoting the show’s “new time”, yet the times on the CBS online schedule had not been changed, nor had a revised entertainment release been issued or have stills been released for the new episode. The show has now been completely removed from the schedule.

In all probability we can expect that Alex O’Loughlin will post a blog on MySpace confirming these developments soon.

James Hibberd writes that all 13 episodes will be completed:

“Rivers” is still in production and the network will complete all 13 episodes of the show’s initial order. Though network sources say no final decision has been made about its future beyond the 13, given the show’s consistent sub-2.0 ratings, fans shouldn’t expect anything more than a burn-off at some point.”

The Wrap speculates on what may replace Three Rivers:

Long-term, one possible scheduling scenario has the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced medical drama formerly known as “Miami Trauma” bowing on Sunday. It could either replace “Three Rivers,” or CBS might opt to shift “Cold Case” back to its old 9 p.m. slot and debut the new show at 10.

The Orlando Sentinel states:

CBS says the show has gone on hiatus. What does that mean? Eight episodes have aired, and production will continue through the 13 episodes originally ordered.
My take: You’re not going to see this show again during the regular season.

If all 13 episodes are to be completed, there may be a chance that the remaining five episodes will either still be broadcast or perhaps included on a DVD release, and/or sold to overseas networks, otherwise it would not make much financial sense to film them all.

On the bright side:

  • Alex can at last take a well-deserved, extended break… with no medical jargon to memorize;
  • Should he decide to move on to another TV show, Three Rivers’ cancellation leaves him enough time to make the fall 2010 line-up, otherwise we would not see him on TV again until 2011;
  • No more sweating the ratings on Monday;
  • Thank God for The Back-Up Plan!

Alex, thank you so very much for giving us your best. To borrow your quote, “none of your love and hard work ever goes unnoticed or unappreciated”. Whatever you choose to do next, we will absolutely be there to support you!

    Thank you MizzoH for this very upsetting news about Three Rivers. I hope Alex will be back quickly on a crime drama series that will be very successful. I believe that Alex still has a contract with CBS.

    Simon Baker, another Aussie actor, was on 2 different dramas on CBS, which did not last long, until his current Mentalist, now on for a second season.

    I’m very optimistic that gifted and intelligent Alex O’Loughlin will be back on a long running drama series on CBS very soon.

    I am so disappointed and sad, Alex gave so much to his character Dr Andy and now the show is canceled without a fair chance to survive! I will be looking forward to The Back-Up Plan and I hope Alex will be back soon!

    Oh God Mizzoh, I am so very disappointed that CBS has done this.
    Airing Three Rivers on a Sunday night with constant football overruns making starting times inconsistent from week to week, not airing the pilot, beginning the show in October, and changing the episode order all seem to have contributed to the less than wanted numbers. I also never understood the change to 10 pm last week.
    Alex, his fellow actors, and the crew have been truly dedicated and worked so hard to bring us a quality show with an important message. I am really upset because I do not believe the network gave the show a fighting chance.
    Alex’s talent is amazing and he will shine in whatever projects he chooses to do. I will always be in a front row seat cheering him on and enjoying his work!
    Thank you Mizzoh for reminding us that he could possibly be in the fall 2010 line-up although I wouldn’t blame him if he wants to avoid TV like the plague! I know The Back-Up Plan will mean many more fans and I’m thrilled we will see him in a comedy.
