Alex O’Loughlin’s 5 Habits for Success

“I have an ultimate goal: I want long-term health. I want to be fit when I’m in my seventies. The work I do now and the seeds I sow now will pay off later.” - Alex O’Loughlin

Being recognized as one of Men’s Fitness fittest in the world can only be the result of knowing what you want to accomplish, total dedication, healthy eating habits and a training program that’s right for you.

Although staying fit has always been a goal for Alex O’Loughlin, getting the physique that all cheese farmers envy and then sculpting it further to Steve McGarrett standard was very much a team effort.

Alex’s personal trainer Jeff Blair first helped him in 2009 to prepare for the role of Stan in The Back-up Plan. More recently, Jeff has been key to getting Alex ready for Season 2 of Hawaii Five-0.

In his blog post “Lessons from 1 of the World’s 25 Fittest Men“, the coach attributes the actor’s success to the following five habits:

1. He brings “it” every time

“It” being energy and absolute focus. Jeff has mentioned before that Alex has that “extra gear” when it comes to concentration and commitment.

“Alex just has the ability to focus and go hard which is probably a big reason he is succeeding in his career. It may not be possible for everyone to match this great quality, but everyone can learn from it and improve.”

2. He is much more interested in the “Why” than most

Alex’s inquiring mind and natural curiosity once led Doctor Gonzo, who helped him prepare for Three Rivers in 2009, to call him a human sponge because he is able to absorb everything.

Jeff writes that Alex’s inquisitiveness is also present during his training sessions and that repeating newly learned ideas to others helps him to anchor them internally. (If you watch Alex in interviews, you’ll notice that he will often repeat a question out loud, which undoubtedly helps him to focus and it also gives him time to formulate an answer.)

3. He mixes it up

Alex avoids getting into a rut by varying his workouts. This not only keeps him from getting bored, but it also prevents his muscles from becoming lazy from doing the “same old, same old” every time.

4. He does not get caught in the “3 sets of 12″ trap

Again, by not following the herd, Alex achieves better results, faster.

5. He enjoys himself

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that a fit body is an excellent buffer for the trials of daily life. When you feel good, it helps you to cope more easily with stress and who wouldn’t want that?

“This does not mean Alex loves being in the gym every day. Like most of us, I am sure there are days when he would rather be doing something else.

“However, Alex is also very aware there are both physical and emotional benefits to being strong and fit. Even on days when he might rather be doing something else, he appreciates that his life improves in multiple ways by following a planned exercise program.”

:sun: Nice article about our super SEAL. Hopefully, Alex is able to squash his cigar habit. I personally know how difficult it can be to stop smoking and how much better you feel once you succeed. Since reading Alex’s comments about using your hand to measure food portions, I’ve been more conscious about portions, too. Only problem is there isn’t a measurement for chocolate!! :wink2:
